A rural character was filling out forms to join the Army. Seems he wanted to get away from home and be his own boss.

He mulled over the question "Do you advocate the overthrow of the US Government by force or violence?"

After much thought, he wrote "Force."

Thats like a chick that was filling out a application and it had a box for sex? She wrote "plenty".

I went into a restaurant years ago and the hostess asked if I had a smoking preference, I said "what do you have to smoke?".

Being the smartass I am, I would have looked at her and said, "I typically have a smoke afterwards.. How about you?"

Thank you, I enjoyed the above. Let me tell a true story about myself.

In 1949, after working almost 5 years as a cowboy on a large Idaho cattle ranch, having never lived in a town but lived approximately a year at a time on different farms after I lost my parents in as a boy. "Green as grass", I enlisted in the army.

After my physical, while the recruiter soldier was completing the paper work, I was asked for my Birth Certificate. I had never heard of a Birth Certificate and had no idea what he was talking about. He told me a Birth Certificate proved that I had been born. I told him where I had been born (on the reservation in Oklahoma), and told him I could not prove it, so he told me "We will let the Army handle that).

I was then asked, "What part of the Army did I want to join"? He named artillery, infantry, others, etc., none of which I knew anything about. I did mention that one farm where I had lived as a young boy was owned by a retired Army Sargent who had retired from the Cavalry. As a proud 19 year old cowboy, I told the recruiter, "The Cavalry, I can ride any damn horse the Army has".

The recruiter only said, "No you can't, The Army doesn't have any horses", as he signed my up for the Army Air Corps.

For years, every time a restaurant cashier, or business clerk asks me for an I.D. when I present a credit card to pay, I always try to look dumb (even dumber than normal) and ask, "Idee about what?" When my wife is with me, I always get an elbow in my ribs. The look on the clerk's face is priceless.

They ask for your ID?

Isn't that racist?

Also not required, nor allowed by the credit source's agreement with the retailer. I simply decline to show them my ID with a polite "No, thank you".

It is a good idea for a clerk to ask for I.D. when you use a credit card to pay for something, every time that you do! It helps cut down on thefts of credit cards and the cards then being used fraudulently to purchase items. Case in point..........My wife left her purse in her car and thought she had it hidden while she worked out at a gym. The car was locked. A thief got in and took her business credit card. (Only 1 card we have as a family. I hate credit cards!) In less than 3 hours the thief then used that stolen credit card to make over $17,000.00 in purchases here where we live! Only 1 (ONE) clerk asked to see an I.D. ,and then they didn't even take the second or two to look at it to see if the I.D. matched the name on the card. (IDIOT!)

If a clerk does not ask me to see I.D. when I use my debit card, I take it out and show it to them anyway. I believe your thinking on this for not asking to see an I.D. is not a good one! No my wife and I were not out the money spent by this thief but it pisses me off to no end that this person was able to readily do this and get away with it. The businesses are out the money as my bank told them if they aren't smart enough to ask to see an I.D., then we are not going to pay these businesses because they are a bunch of idiots and are out money. So what happens is the prices of goods continues to go up and eventually we end up paying in the end because the business will raise prices to make up for their losses.

In this day, when some scumbag can electronically steal your bank info simply by walking past you, I never understood why anyone would refuse to show ID to prove that the money they are spending is theirs to spend. I have said for years that if someone was to somehow get access to my checks/credit cards (and successfully use them) I would be having a "chat" with two people, the thief that stole it.... and the person that accepted it from the thief. I want all businesses to be a good steward of my funds. And please don't tell me that the CC company will take care of it.......covering those costs are one of the main excuses the CC companies use to justify their high fees. :?

My point is this: the purchaser is not required to show ID when using a credit card as a form of payment, nor, by contract between the issuer and the retailer, can a consumer be refused service for declining to present ID.

If an individual chooses to provide ID, well, that's his/her choice, not obligation. Charges on a stolen card are not the obligation of the victim to pay if the card holder has reported it stolen, even after illegal use. The consumer is off the hook, and the retailer gets paid.

I pay zero fees, - zero - for my credit union issued credit card. My interest rate is 7%. Not the best, but not exorbitant. By the way, I have NEVER been asked to provide ID when using a debit card. My debit card also functions as a credit card. When swiped as a debit purchase my PIN is required. When swiped as a credit purchase no PIN necessary but my signature is required, at least on some machines. Some machines these days don't require a signature on credit cards.

What can I say...
