I met one B-24 pilot of those raids. It was a short but interesting conversation. He flew out of Africa I believe.

It was still a tough target in Aug.1944 when my Dad flew several missions to take it out. He received two Air Medals for the missions. The 15th Air Force finally took it out.
They were not as bad as the B-24 and the first attempt.
