Is This a Good Trade?

Having a hard time deciding on whether to make this trade, I have been offered a blue 5 1/2" bull barrel 22/45 Mark III for my SR22, looks like they are close in value for a fair straight across deal, I have never owned or even shot a 22/45 so have no idea what I would be getting.

I was wondering if others would make this trade or keep their SR22 and whether or not a 22/45 is a better gun since I know nothing about them?

If it were a steel Mk II (not 22/45) I'd make that trade in a heartbeat, too. A steel Mk III trade would probably take a few minutes' thinking about but still be ok. Not sure if I'd trade plastic for plastic but for those who would, the 22/45's been around quite a while and seems to work ok. I'm sure there's a market for the SR22, but it doesn't include me.

Is there a difference between a Mark III and a 22/45 are they the same gun or different guns? I see Ruger lists them like they are separate, what is the difference in these two guns? are the receiver's the same?

It went back to ruger twice, failure to feed and failure to eject. Don't know what they did the second time but it runs any 22LR ammo you care to feed it, with zero problems. I have run over a thousand rounds of assorted junk through it without cleaning. Had it out the other day and the Wife put another 400 or so rounds through it with no problems.

Found out the offered 22/45 has a polymer frame, so do all the Mark III guns come polymer?

The 22/45 is the polymer frame .22 and you can get it with or without replaceable grip panels. The standard Mark III has an all steel frame and a different grip angle, more like the grip of a Luger. The 22/45 has the grip angle of a 1911, thus the 22/45 designation. Myself, if I were to get a 22/45 it would have to be the one with the replaceable grip panels.

My opinion, the best Mark series gun made was the Mark II, 6 7/8" bull barrel government model. I had one and sold it for some reason and I still rue that decision.

Thanks for you input that helps me understand these guns more, yes I sure wouldn't want one that you couldn't change grips on, I like the idea of the grip being the same angle as a 1911 but would much rather have a steel frame, Rugers site wasn't much help it says they are made of steel but don't tell you the frame is polymer.

My son recently bought a 22/45 lite. It was unreliable and had several horrid tics the factory was kind enough to remove. Still required considerable aftermarket parts to upgrade accuracy/performance to get to par with the old Mk II target.

After numerous project hours of labor & parts (not entirely unpleasant) his 22/45 LITE now is quite pleasing in all ways. It is eerily light weight and adequately accurate. In general though, having grown up with the Mk I II III steelies, I personally prefer their idiosyncrasies. Know nothing of the SR22, what's your own likes?

Well my own likes are something with a steel frame, it's one reason why I was to trade off the SR22 just don't care for polymer guns.

Also got offered a 38 spl. revolver for it but it was a Taurus altra-lite, I have never heard anything good about Taurus.

I've got an SR22 (with a threaded barrel) and I love to shoot it, just a fun little gun to shoot. Put the suppressor on it (the suppressor doubles the length of the gun) and you don't hear anything, less noise than a BB gun.

Now for pure accuracy, I like the standard Mark series gun with the steel frame. I really wish I hadn't sold that government model Mark II, it was a tackdriver.

Where did you get that idea? If you've been to Ruger's website, perhaps you've seen this page, and you've read where Ruger clearly states that ALL of their MkIII .22LR pistols have steel frames. http://www.ruger.com/products/markIII/index.html

Have another good look and you'll see what folks have been trying to tell you: 22/45's = polymer frame.

Well good that's what I needed to know Ruger don't exactly say the frame is steel on the Mark III.

When I have guys on Armslist telling me their plastic framed guns are mark III I get confused, like I said I don't know anything about these guns, never owned one.

Can only go from Mark 2 series ,as owned a few.

Owned several Ruger rim-fire handguns over the years.....
Mostly MARK series, but also owned a Super single SIX..with both 22 lr and 22 magnum cylinders.

Now own (BOUGHT NEW,LONG AGO) a MARK 2 Stainless 5 1/2" 22/45. bull barreled.
And yes a synthetic grip.

Functions as reliable as the other ,all metal MARK series guns I owned before.
Fired it with, and without a scope...accuracy,not a problem.
It has a few groundhog kills....one at 25 yards with open sites.

This gun is a total favorite.....a NEVER SELL.
Lighter weight,yet will outlast me,reliable,and accurate......
Not to mention,a fun gun to shoot!


Problem is,
Zero experience with a Mark 3,
So no idea if my post will help or not.

Others can share if a difference between the mark 2 and Mark 3.
