I'm waiting to get a proper safe in place...I have storage/safe but not suffecient...I have several of my guns stored at my neighbor's house in his large safe....think I've found the one I want and should pick it up this week....In the interim I have taken some steps that, while are not real protection of the firearms being stolen are measures that would make it very difficult for the thief to be able to unload them for cash without some work and possibly leaving a trail of "evidence".
I have a complete list of my guns with serial number and any identifying markings, etc. Most of my guns are single action so I removed the cylinder and base pin from each of the guns that I seldom shoot as well as the grips...they all go in a baggie with a desicant bag to prevent rust and a note as to which gun they fit. The gun is now stored with no grips, no cylinder and no base pin (they are secured elsewhere)....sure all these items can be replaced but not all that easily by a "smash and grab" thief. My double actions have the grips off, the main spring removed and in some cases the trigger assy is pulled out...again, in a bag with a note and desicant)...Semi Autos can be field stripped and the slide and barrel stored away from the main parts of the pistol.....Years ago I worked in a shop that sold guns, sporting goods and boats and motors....we would get constant alerts from the outboard manufacturer to be on the lookout for people wanting to buy a fuel tank and lines...seems back then if a motor got stolen, most of the time the gas tank was just left....The manufacturer suggested the motor be "brought by" so that the proper connectors would be provided...then the serial # could be checked against the stolen motor list. I realize life is much different these days but at least a thief that grabbed some guns that are missing a bunch of parts will have to spend a lot of time and expose himself to replace the parts and might choose not to mess with them at all....I may lose the guns but they dont recirculate as easily.
Yep, the safe is the only way and I'll have that all resolved this week but for folks that might be pondering a safe right now or have an overflow for a short time...this might be an idea.
