I've been looking at a nice Police Security Service Six marked H.P.D. It is (Or certainly appears to be) the GF-34, the SS, fixed sights, 4", .357. I have looked through Chad's book about 6 times and possibly I'm blind (Good chance!) but I cannot seem to find a reference to this gun. Anyone know because I'm leaning toward buying it?

Thanks!

Which one is it? A Ruger Police Service Six, 4", .357, marked H.P.D., or is it a Ruger Security Six, 4", .357, marked H.P.D.?

I don't recall ever seeing or hearing of a Police Security Service Six. Among my Sixes I have a stainless 4" Ruger Police Service Six, .357 Magnum, made in 1976.

Well that was pretty dumb of me  ! It is the Police Service Six. I have no clue except dementia why I wrote in Security!

Sorry Hugh. I don't have any idea why I said Security except poaaible dementia.

It is the exact same gun as yours, also 1976, but with the 2 3/4" barrel. From what I can ascertain from Chad's book and the RCA, there was only 5 or 6 made with the seller stating 6. The seller is a trusted individual and he says it's LNIB but he has no boxes. He wants $900 for it but without the boxes so I'm not so sure I like that part of it. Let's say it IS everything he says. Even without the boxes do you think $900 is a fair price?

Thanks,

Ken

Hi Ken,

I don't believe I'd pay $900 for a Six unless I was in desperate need of a firearm. Or, if I had managed to collect one each of all of the Sixes and that one would finish my collection. At the moment neither of those conditions exist.

Would H.P.D. whoever or where ever they are have ordered only five or six of those? Would Ruger have made a run of only five or six firearms for an agency?

That said, I believe $900 sounds kinda high. I'd say no more than $450, but that might be high also. I have a 3" stainless Service Six .357 which is in very good shape; I paid $350 for it three years ago. I have a 4" beater/truck gun stainless 4" Service Six that I paid $240 for almost two years ago.

I'm guessing someone more knowledgeable will step in and help.

I want to apologize to Hugh and everyone else who's wasted time on this today. I have been looking at several Service Sixes and the reply I made above is about the OTHER Six.

Yes, THIS topic is about the H.P.D model that I can't find a reference to. The OTHER topic was about a non cataloged Six I was offered to buy for $900. that the RCA and Chad Do reference. Confused - so am I

Did I dream this or ...... have I read that Service Six's were exported in the early 80's to the Hong Kong Police Department? H.P.D. ??

In Chad's book he mentions ALL sorts of LEO type organizations but not Hong Kong, and not Honolulu, and although there was a Hawaii model it was not H.P.D. I was just hoping someone might know as the price is very reasonable in my opinion.

Thanks everyone.

That would not really surprise me. The Hong Kong police did have a number of S&W Model 10's that made it back into the U.S. market several years ago. Could be they replaced some of them with Rugers; but I would think, considering history, that they would be .38 Spl, or perhaps 9mm.
