my goal is to get in my old uniform.

7 more lbs to go.

salads, fruit, and a bean chicken burrito once a day. no eating after 6pm. no snacks, no bread. no meat over 4oz.

I did the same amount in about the same time. Eat what ever I want, when
ever I want. I just walk EVERY night.

Started out at twenty minutes per day and gradually increased it to a full hour
every day. I do that about a half hour after I eat. That leaves time to clean up
the kitchen after dinner and change clothes if the weather dictates.

My theory is that with food in the stomach, your body is willing to release
fat as you walk.

It works!

I even got a headset and digital music player ($35).
That gets rid of some of the boredom.
Earbuds are for those attempting deafness.

Congrats!
For me, it's the mid afternoon and after dinner snacks that are the killer.

I've lost a little over 40 lbs this past year just by adjusting my diet to less than 55 grams of fat/day. A couple times a month I might splurge and eat without keeping track of fat intake. The first 3 months loss was rather rapid, similar to the OP's, now it is just slow and steady loss. I'd like to lose another 40 to 50 lbs., my Doctor agrees with me.

Okay; a question: Are you sure it isn't the beans in that burrito that are contributing to your apparent weight loss?
I found that I do BETTER at losing weight by eliminating the carbohydrates which the body loves to store as fat and then reduce the quantity of eats. Fats are NOT a problem for weight.
Yeah, gotta start those walks again NOW that I'm pretty well recovered from my back surgery. Before I could not walk very far before the pain got to me.

Beans have worked for my in the past when I've tried to lose weight. They are complex carbs so they don't convert to sugar immediately as say a piece of white bread would. Beans are also naturally fat free, so you do get some benefit there as well.

I lost a lot of weight about 7 years ago and have done pretty good at keeping off most of it, lean protein like chicken or fish and yes, beans and salad.

oh, and wine, not beer!

Hi,

This is an ongoing discussion with some folks I know. The "well rounded" ones tend to eat a lot of carbs. The skinny ones tend to eat a lot of carbs, too. The difference between them seems to be more the level of activity which burns the calories taken in, plus extras as required. The nutritionists tell me carbs are the first "fuel" the body burns, and it can't become fat if it's been used up! So the low carb approach simply forces the body to start in on its reserves earlier, assuming there's enough demand (aka "activity") for fuel. Makes sense to me...

My favorite "diet" is one I like to call the David S... diet, after an old shooting buddy. His doc, concerned about Dave's heart, suggested there was about 50 lbs of "extra Dave" that could go away which the heart would appreciate. Dave's wife was on a PERPETUAL diet of one sort or another, and yo-yo'd like so many who take that approach, so Dave asked the doc what kind of diet he should try.

Doc told him to forget diets. He explained the yo-yo effect, and told Dave the body tends not to like changes in what it's used to getting, so all he had to do was continue eating exactly what he already did, just not nearly so much. If he had two plates of food at dinner, cut it to one. If he just had one, but it was piled up, don't pile it up so high... so Dave did just that.

A year later, he had lost 52 lbs, that proverbial "pound a week" they claim is a healthy level. In the same time, Mrs. Dave had probably lost 100! Difference was Dave kept his off, she got all hers back! For the umpteenth time.

Add walking into that, and some good things can happen, too. Years ago there were some ladies who lived a half mile down the street from me. They were neighbors, all in their early 30s, had kids, busy lives, the basic soccer Mom thing. And like so many soccer Moms, they were all rounding out some...

One of them started walking. Our street has a long incline, and she measured it out from her house to the top of the street and back was two miles almost exactly. She started walking it alone, at first "one lap a day" then graduating to two, and in just a few months all the excess "round" was gone and she was looking (and feeling!) great. One of her girlfriends, a little rounder to start with, joined her, and she, too, shaped up quite nicely. This inspired the third one, roundest of the bunch to start, to join "the club." It took her a little longer, but pretty soon these were the three best looking gals in their neighborhood! No diets, no gyms, just walking.

Calories in < calories out = weight loss

Calories in > calories out = weight gain.

It's hard to argue with that! ;)

"The nutritionists tell me carbs are the first "fuel" the body burns, and it can't become fat if it's been used up!"
And Dr Atkins found that IF you eat carbs, the body will burn that first and LEAVE the body fat it has stored around the middle and in other parts of the body. Various University Studies over the years have confirmed Dr Atkins claims and statements (Sorry, don't have his original book <lost in a move> with the various links,) nor do I have the links to the other studies (on an old Computer). Of course his diet recommended getting the body started on burning body fat (confirmed by checking the Ketosis in your urine) and then very gradually adding back carbs until you were just barely in ketosis. Eat a piece of birthday cake/mom's apple pie/ or other carb rich goodie and drop back to zero carbs for a bit until you again were in slight ketosis.
As far as "nutritionists"; they are the SAME bunch that were promoting the Government "Food Triangle" of IDIOCY for far too many years and Pooh poohing Atkins while trashing eggs, whole milk and other good nutrious foods. Let us ALSO NOT forget their long term love of "LOW FAT" foods despite the fact that when the fat went out, SO DID THE FLAVOR and they had to add tons of sugar (pure absolute carbohydrates) to make the the "stuff" tasty enough to eat. I'm in the habit of reading the "nutrition labels" on all the foods I buy; High carbs? BACK onto the shelf it goes. Yeah, I know that fiber content does count for some carbs and I take that into account.
There was a book written by a pair of English Doctors about SUGAR being a poison for the human body (in the late 60's-early 70's); Unfortunately I don't remember the title and have not been able to run it down.
Whatever works for you, BUT I love my red beef, pork and some fish (other than SALMON !!! UGH TOO fishy for me). By the way, don't set a plate of Corn on the Cob in front of me !!! NO resistance with butter and a sprinkling of
salt !!

I have lost 22 pounds since August 1, and I have 48 more pounds to go to reach my ideal weight. The rate of loss has slowed down this month, which is to be expected. At age 69 it is lose the weight or die from obesity. I walk from 3 to 4 miles 4 or 5 times a week, and I basically avoid most anything I really like. No deserts, candies, cookies, cakes, bread products, ice cream, and reduced dairy products, a few fruits, but mostly oatmeal, lean meats, eggs, green vegetables. I absolutely don’t eat fast foods, and I do my best never to eat out anywhere. I take my food if I will be gone long enough to need to eat.

Different people do better on different diets and it is about finding one you can live with and that works for you. The walking really helps to burn off some calories, and to keep my basic metabolism working at a higher rate, so I burn more calories even when not exercising.

For me I will be on a restricted diet the rest of my life. Of course once the weight is off, the diet is not as severe, but I still will have to avoid any of the foods I truly like. Eat right or die is my situation.

Good luck to any of you on a diet or needing to be on a diet.

Hi,

Two different ways of saying what ends up with the same result!

If you need 2000 calories per day for your size, activity level, etc., and you eat 2500 calories a day of nothing but chicken, how much weight will you lose? OTOH, if you require 2500 calories, and eat 2000 calories a day of nothing but corn on the cob, what's the result gonna be? :)

I reckon I am lucky here. I weigh within 15 pounds of my 18 year old weight. I do not watch my diet, don't count carbs/fat and I eat anything I want. My waist size was 33 at 18, 35 at 40 and 34 at 50. My weight has been from 195 to 210 for the last 35 years.
I am not bragging just telling the truth. I am very active 6 days a week. I do not eat regular on time meals. I can eat one meal a day and be fine, I don't feel hunger for longer than 3-4 minutes. ( my weakness is bacon and eggs)
I applaud anyone who looses weight, it is a great thing. I have been scolded by the doctors for not eating regularly, they say it is hard on my body, but I won't eat if I'm not hungry.
America has an overweight problem for sure. I personally never understood it. I thought it could be fixed by stop putting the food in your mouth..... just shows my ignorance about metabolism.
God bless you folk actively trying to loose weight. You are among the few who are doing something to better your selves!
Wife bought me a pedometer some years back, I averaged 9 miles a day.

I actually did lose 80 lbs. Gained some back, fortunately. Gallbladder removed and they missed a stone. 4 doctors, scopes, MRIs, CATs and it took 7 months to find it. Everything I ate doubled me over so bad I actually picked up my .45 a couple of times. It hurt to bad to put the gun to my head. It was that bad. They finally got rid of the stone and now I've stabilized at 164 for 2 years. But it takes discipline in eating and hitting the gym at least 3 times a week. Pretty good from 210 but I sure as hell DON'T recommend it as a diet method.

Congratulations. Keep doing what works for you.

I am fortunate in that I eat anything that I like, as I have mentioned on this site with my previous posts. In fact I have been on a See-Food diet for decades. If I see it I eat it. I am over age 85 and I am only 9 to 11 pounds heavier than my Highschool weight when I was a wrestler in Highschool. In my Senior year, 1947, I weighed and wrestled as a 185 pounder. The last time I weighed, about two weeks ago just our of the shower, I topped 192 pounds.

I have never been one to stick with an exercise program. I am fortunate my job requires physical activity. When I was younger I stayed between 185-195 pounds. Now at 50 I tend to stay between 195-205. Then I wore 32/34 jeans now I'm in 34/34. I wouldn't mind being that small again but I'm fine with where I'm at.

My wife went on the low carb diet. She is off of it now & most of the weight is back. I suspect when our youngest gets just a little older & she has a little more freedom her weight will change. She did well with it though-eliminating bread & avoiding starches.

Sure one can loose weight by restricting food intake. It worked out well for Karen Carpenter. I prefer the approach Rick put forth above. I eat like a pig, hungry all the time, eat what I want - lots of carbs, and then go out and burn 'em off. And the plus is I have a pretty good cardio/vascular system for one closing in on 70 (resting heart rate of 50).
Far better way to keep weight down than starving oneself while sitting around watching TV.

(YMMV)

I aint a poster boy for anything. I was born fat and thats where I am at. Years ago I went on the Atkins diet a number of times. It does work and it almost killed me. I was losing weight but when I stood up the world would spin. I am 74, now about 280 and 6ft. Years ago I was about 6ft 2"s and usualy anywhere from 255 to over 3 spins.
Once on the Atkins diet I got down for a couple minuets to about 190 lbs. When I was young I got a job I wanted to keep. The chief of my guard department said he wanted to see me lose weight by the end of my probation. I went to a doctor and he put me on thyroid pills and I lost 40 pounds in less than three months. I kept the job, my doctor died, I gained all the weight back plus more. I must have tried to get back on thyroid pills a half dozen times with a half dozen doctors and none would give me the pills. They said I aint bad enough and am in the low range of "normal".
At this point in my life I dont much care or bother. I know I should be more active but have no ambition plus I dont eat a fraction of what got me here. Oh well.

.

I'm on a seefood diet - I eat anytime I see food. ;)

It turns out that I'm only short for my weight - according to the weight/height charts, I should be 12' 6" tall.......

.

I also am under height. :D

I quit smoking many years ago and of course gained twenty pounds. Right about that time the CDC came out with a study that said being twenty pounds over weight was worse than smoking for your heart.

Can't win!

I eat what I want, but get a lot of exercise. My weight is stable at 20 lbs. over weight. 8)

Reminds me, I have Brit friend that describes herself as being 5 Foot 13 inches tall. That said, I only weight 16 3/4 Stone   :D  Working on getting it down, my goal is 12.5 Stone.

Hi,

Pamela, do you still have your bicycle, and if so, will the doc let you ride it yet after the surgery? "More miles" seems to me to be a lot more fun than eating a teaspoon of tofu every 12 hours or any of those other "super diets!" Gotta admit to getting a kick out of the "cookie air" diet commercial on TV, though (it's for some kinda cereal that's all full of nuts and berries and such.)
