During our conversation, he said, "Bob, you see everything in black and white. You don't change your mind. You don't waver back and forth."

Somehow, that seemed to be a compliment.

yup - Bob lives in TN, and Southerners often go so far out of their way to be polite you have to be very perceptive to figure out what they REALLY mean.

For example, if he preceded it with something like "Bless Your Heart Bob, you see everything in black and white. You don't change your mind. You don't waver back and forth", then you could definitely count that as a slam.
