Well the annual spring bear hunt has came & gone, sure did fly by in a hurry! You wait all year & count the days & its over in a flash.
Joined by good friends Jeff (Tank) Hoover & Mike (Doc) (Hidestretcher) Barranti we gave it a good shot...pun!
My original plan was to head up to Challis & hunt some of the best areas in the state, after visiting with a friend who had just returned I decided it was too early to go there so a quick change of plans had us headed clear across the state. Passing through Boise without even stopping at Cabelas (later) we spent part of the day enjoying the little town of Riggins on the mighty Salmon River, awesome country.
Later that day we would continue north into some new country in search of the elusive & facsinating black bear. It took us a few days to locate the right area but on the next to last day 2 shooter bears were spotted. The first was a nice mature solid black & the second was a chocolate phase bear that was a little smaller.
The day was getting late & rather than risk a late stalk we decided to wait until the next day (last day) before trying to locate them again. We didn't spot either bear the next day but did see 2 other bears, one was a absolutely beautiful Cinnamon phase bear with blond shoulders & deep, black legs, maybe the prettiest bear I've ever seen. The other bear was another black but not quite as big as the one the day before. Barranti would close on this one very fast, he needed another 90 seconds.
I'll leave the rest of the story up to my 2 amigos, they can also include a shoot out with a large Porcupine & a very funny Badger story, the names will be changed to protect the innocent!
On the 500 mile return trip we did make a necessary stop at Cabelas to have a repeat visit with Elmer Keith & a very enjoyable visit & lunch with John Taffin, who always knows of a good Mexican resturant in the area. Photos later, camera is still packed.
