I WONDER

Just got back from the dr's office/lab for annual blood draw for my medical exam. I sat in the LARGE waiting room with about 50 people. Almost everyone of them was busily interacting with their 'smart' phone....literally the whole time each of them was on line or sitting/waiting. I always wonder.... what the hell are they doing on that thing? I doubt that they are busy at work duties; but maybe they are? Any ideas..???
I WONDER,
J.
I have a flip phone that makes every call I need to make---and since I realize I am a creature of habit and would likely join those 50 you saw and be flipping away at whatever nonsense there is, I refuse to get a smart phone. Saw a man and woman recently at my favorite little diner near here--he was a handsome Tarzan--her a curvy and beautiful Jane for sure--the whole time they sat there they flipped away on their smart phones---not speaking a word to each other. Being a recent widower, I marvelled at this, I wanted to beckon her over to my table and gab with her, let him wear out the phone keys by himself.

They are likely on Facebook.

An honest man does exist!

Watching porn in a public place does not seem to make much sense to me. Unless maybe the porn does not trigger any reaction since a normal "reaction" might prove embarrassing in public.

Personally I spend time catching up on the news (FOX News has a decent app) and playing some word games or bridge to keep my brain working. (Solitaire games on the smartphone are seemingly made too easy to win about 75% of the time, a much higher rate than when playing with a real deck of cards. Makes it too easy and not as much fun.) I do the NYT Wordle every day and sitting in a waiting room is the perfect place to do it.

I tend to play games, not as much in my PCP's office but in Doc's offices where you are waiting on getting called in for your appointment @ 0900 and you are waiting till 1000 or 1030!

I have one of those portable DVD players and it'll just about handle two average length movies on a charge, maybe a slightly bit more. When I was doing the chemo early on, I'd charge it up overnight and take it, a couple of movies and some ear buds and sit through the roughly three to three and a half hours while plugged into the machine that pumped their poison into me. It made the time go pretty fast. I have roughly 1,100+ DVDs to choose from. I started picking them up from flea markets, swap meets. pawn shops and yard sale when my wife started showing signs of dementia. I just never stopped when she passed.
When the chemo emo ended and I started radiation, that was every day. The treatment lated less than ten minutes. Then they held off a bit and started a different form of combination treatment of radiation and chemo. That session was usually 4.5 to 5 hours long. So, I brought a book with me.
Seems after a treatment they have these lead vials that held whatever they used. They usually threw them away or maybe sold them as scrap. One day the nurse came up to me and asked me if I had any use for lead? Now I hadn't ever mentioned being a shooter or reloader or anythng of the sort so that surprised me. I said that could use some so she said they had a bunch of the vials that were used to hold radioactive materials and I was welcome to take them. She brought one out for me to see and I'm guessing it weighed close to four pounds, give or take. Estimated weight is approximately 140+ pounds. These things are I'm positive for all practical purposes 100% pure lead.
At 87 years old, I doubt very much I'll be casting any balls for BP shooting so I should sell the stuff. Shipping would be prohibitive in cost so the offer is for anyone within driving distance of Tucson.

In the environment you describe, I'm most often listening to an audiobook, scrolling through the news, memorizing lyrics for my acoustic guitar duo or playing games like sudoku/puzzles (anything that requires rubbing a few brain cells together).

Since I always have an iPhone with me, sitting and waiting at the doctor or DMV isn't such an annoying PITA anymore. I do make a point of going to places like that early so I'm not swept aside behind an exponential backlog of inevitable delays as the day progresses.

I NEVER open anything requiring a password in a public place. My personal business/finances are not for hacking oxygen bandits.

If I'm with somebody, I put the phone in my pocket and pay attention to them.

I've played a lot of games of Sudoku while in waiting rooms, riding on ferries, taking a dump, other times when of forced or voluntary inactivity. Not a great use of time but maybe a bit less mindless than TikTok.
