Hey guys.

Does anyone know if Altamont makes this set of handles to fit a small grip frame SBH?

http://altamontco.com/products/pistol/ruger/superblackhawk.php

They are the finger grip ones at the very bottom right of the page.

Also, has anyone heard that the Hogue rubber Monogrip has fitting issues with the NM SBH small grip frame guns?

Reading reviews on Midway's website about this grip, more than a few said that it just does not fit these guns.

I need to get rid of these plow handle small grips on my .44 mag. They just are too small for my hands with the recoil of magnum rounds.

When I bought this gun, I had no idea that Ruger puts a smaller grip frame on the 4-5/8 & 5.5" barrelled guns. HOW STUPID IS THAT??!!
A .44 magnum is a .44 magnum.

I prefer oversize finger grip style and the Altamont's fit the bill to a T. Both aesthetically and functionally.

Most other aftermarket grips that meet my needs are just BUTT UGLY.

Any help is appreciated.

Ahhh don't feel stupid, , , Ruger has used 5 different Grip Frames on the 44 Mag. XR3, XR3-RED, K/MR00300, KHR00300 & Bisley.

Think about the first Ruger built in 44 Mag,,,Flattop w/ the XR3 Grip Frame made from aluminum, Now that's a hand full with the full power loads.

I would suggest you change out the XR3-RED you currently have, to a K/MR00300 so that you could order those grips and they will fit just fine.
Add the K for Stainless, drop it for Blue. K/MR00300

Now for the bad news as of late these Grip Frames have been hard to find NEW. Might want to put a WTB in the classifieds for a donor, might even offer to trade your current GF.

Is your gun blue or stainless? I have a stainless SBH dragoon grip frame that I bought off another forum member here. It was taken off a gun it had been fitted to, and it did not fit great on my gun, so I took it back off. I'll sell it to someone who needs one, but I can't promise it will fit!

Thanks for the kind offer but, I'd rather not gamble on something that may or may not work.

Thank you anyway.

Heh, heh...No, what I mean, is that I think that it is stupid for Ruger to make such a heavy caliber stiff recoiling gun with such a small GF.

ALL .44 magnums should have the larger GF found on the longer barrel lengths. It was my own ignorance not knowing that the shorter barrel guns have a GF for a ten-year-olds hand.

I like 4-inch barrels on revolvers. So the small GF would not have made a dif. to me anyway.

The best scenario for me is to find a nice pair of oversize custom grips that will fit my existing GF. Surely, SOMEONE must make them for this GF.

Thanks for the advice though!

Well I for one am glad they fianlly put a smaller grip frame on the 44 mag. Now I have a gun that fits my smaller than yours hands.

You can do just about anything with grips and frames.

I've got a couple of fingergroove sets that fit the standard frame New Model Blackhawk if that's what you have. I could email you some pictures if you'd like.

Altamont will make the grips but you will have to wait. They fail to tell you that Ruger grips can take 4-8 weeks before shipping. I recently purchase 4 sets of Ruger grips and it took 8 weeks. When the grips arrived one set had chips and cuts. Looked like quality control was asleep. I sent the set back and I am still waiting.

You might want to try Esmeralda. She makes some outstanding grips.

My 4 5/8 SBH uses all the grips that fit Vaqs & Blackhawks. Have not tried Hogues. My favorite for heavy loads are Herrett oversize I found at gun show for $10. They eliminate the bite.
