I have a little trouble with an auction indicating 'value'.

Was following this auction on Gunbroker.com. No matter how I analyze it, the ending price seems a bit high to me.

$4,075 for a SDA-84L with U.S. markings with original foil packing from the Ruger factory collection. A nice, desirable collector's piece, for sure, but.....OMG!

The other thing to look at is most of the guns that Ruger auctions off go to benefits of some cause or organization. those people involved with those causes hype it pretty strongly to their fellowship to raise funds. Look at what some of those Ducks Unlimited shotguns go for at auction to their members. Crazy

Too bad they cut it out of the foil - it could have brought some serious money if it was still sealed :)

Dan has made an excellent point.

There are people out there who can afford to bid that high on certain firearms, fully aware that they are paying far more than the gun is worth. But are perfectly satisfied that their money supports a cause that they themselves support.

I tip my hat to them, and wish I could afford to play the game with them,

Yeah, maybe. Funny story I heard once was of a big collector from Pennsylvania who spotted a bunch of old Ruger shipping sleeves laying on a table, with several #5x two-digit guns, two different serial numbers, including the Lightweights, the flattops and the other early OM delicacies, all were still sealed in the original shipping sleeves, never opened. So the collector asked him, "So how do you really know there's a Lightweight Single-Six in that box, and not an unidentifiable rusty piece of junk"? he got the man's curiosity up so opened one of the Lightweights to find a absolutely NIB unturned Lightweight with beautiful minty unturned blue and silver blackwreath box.
Did the same thing with Ruger's Bianchi holsters and found that many had holsters in them that weren't the model described on the box.
