I found myself in a pub in Cork.

A group of American tourists came in.

One of the Americans said, in a loud voice, "I hear you Irish think your great drinkers.

I bet 5,000 euros that no-one here can drink 30 pints of Guinness in 30 minutes."

The bar was silent, the American noticed one Irishman leaving, no-one took up the bet.

40 minutes later the Irishman who left returned and said "Hey Yank, is your wee bet still on?"

"Sure" said the American, "30 pints in 30 minutes for a bet of 5,000 euros."

"Grand, " replied the Irishman, "so pour the pints and start the clock."

It was very close but the last drop was consumed with 2 seconds to spare.

"OK Yank, pay up." said the Irishman..

"I'm happy to pay, here's your money" said the American.

"But tell me, when I first offered the wager I saw you leave. Where did you go?'

The Irishman replied, "Well sir, 5,000 euros is a lot of money to a man like
me, so I went to the pub across the road to see if I could do it."

Mind you WJ, this is a TRUE story about Irish pubs. Few years back, Annie and I were on the West Shore of Ireland (Dingle area), and wandered into an Irish pub that presented traditional Irish music in a jam session. Annie and I joined the session (Annie-Guitar - Coop-fiddle), and the first tune played by the local musicians was a jig, "Lark of the Morning", a tune we both knew, and was part of our set performance set list stuff. We finished the tune in front of a whole lot of American tourists who attended the session. After we finished playing the tune, a couple from the group from Texas came to us and asked "where ya'll from?". We told them Pittsburgh, PA and totally stunned them. It was precious. It was one of the many highlights of our Irish Tour that year.

We love Ireland, and, God willing, we hope to get back there in 2015.

Was in Cork a few years ago. Went into a pub for a pint and noticed three young local lads drinking Bud Lite! Couldn't believe it.

Drinking American brews when better beer was available was also something I witnessed when I was stationed in Germany back in the late 60's. You would be surprised at the number of troops who ordered up an American beer rather than drink a real brew.

Never understood that.

Some of the best beer I've ever drunk was in England; Old Speckled Hen was one of them, another was Bodington's Ale; A couple of others I can't recall the names . Walking down the "beer" aisle in ASDA ( Walmart in England) was interesting to see all the different brand names.

I managed a group of expats in a construction camp outside of Aktau Kazakhstan and one was from Cork. He was hilarious come Friday night at the camp pub. I mean hilarious.
