Our local bulk ammo dealer is having a big sale today.
I was happy with the prices so I bought a case of 9mm and a case of 5.56.
Loaded them into my rig then watched two guys in parking area load 18 cases of 5.56 into their Jeep.
Then I drove home:oops:

I truly don't need more ammo, but all it takes is a sale or other special offering, and I buy more, just to be hid in the shed for my kids some day.

Heck you should have followed them home and made a note. When everything goes south you could just stop in to borrow when they're not home!

A 'case' is a fairly random number these days. Might be 200 or 500 or 1K.
I think 10x of 20 round boxes is a fairly common centerfire hunting ammo 'case'.
Back in the 'old days' 22 ammo came in boxes of 50, 'cartons' of 500, and 'cases' of 5000. Now, it depends on the packaging.
I get an upset stomach when I think back to when I quit buying 22's because a 'case' hit $200 delivered. :rolleyes:

Yeah, if you want a "real world" measure of inflation just consider what you used to pay for .22 ammo, and what you pay now. Guess that's the reason I've never, ever regretted buying ammo (of any caliber) when I stumble across a great sale price!

I just recently received an order of 6,000 rounds (a mix of 5.56, 7.62x39, 10MM, 45ACP, and 22MAG). I believe we are at the end of the UPS route as they always come about 6PM. That driver was already drenched in sweat when he arrived. The driveway was full, and there is a shallow irrigation ditch along the road so a dolly wouldn't work. It's about 40 yards to the porch. 1,000 rd cases packed individually meant six trips. Probably not what he wanted to do end of day. Luckily Seabee Son was home on weekend liberty and carried it down to the Gun Room as I'm still in recovery status for lifting :rolleyes:

FWIW SGAmmo sends 1,000 rds (5.56) in flat metal cans with handles. Very convenient.

Been there. Brother & I leaving a chain sports store after grabbing up 10 or 12 flats of shotgun shells 7 feeling pretty proud of the bulk we just bought.
And then, we saw a guy, the buyer just strolling along & had a store clerk pushing his for him as he'd just bought about 40 flats. One of us said; we thought we really doing something, & the other of us said; yeah, we're just rookies I guess.

Back in the day, the local WALMART sold 550 rounds Federal .22 LR in a milk carton box for US $9.99. Bought so much, the store clerk knew what I wanted when I walked up the counter. Bought 2-3 boxes each week for about a year. Quit when priced increased to over US $10.00 a box! Those were days....

I remember when we used to buy a brick of 22 for $9.95 (500 rnds). My son had a job for a couple years at a local large sporting goods store. He did a lot of the ordering for them. He called me one day and said the distributor had a special price on a case of 22 federal lightning and did I want some? I asked him how much the case was and he said 10 bucks. If I remember a case was 10 bricks. I said heck yes, and I was sure several friends that were hunters from work would be interested as well. I told him order four cases. The word got out and by the time the four cases came to me. I had four of my good friends that wanted some, so I gave them to the friends, went back to my son and said all my cases were gone and could he order a couple more for me, when he went to order more he found out the distributor had put in the price for a brick on the case and they lost ther butt selling them at that price, so I didn’t get my case.
Today I went to SGAMMO and made my 3K round order on 22lr that will be for me and Christmas presents to son and SIL, They have free shipping on orders over $200. No problem exceeding that!

I started buying .22s in 1970. Mini Mags were 1 cent apiece, and you got a nice plastic box. The last time I did a major stockup was in 2022 and I paid a nickel apiece. They were NOT on sale, but it was a time that supplies were quite plentiful and the price had recently come down. Regardless, the cost was 5x more. (These were bulk boxes, but in my firearms they work just as well.)

The inflation calculator showed that $0.010 in 1970 was worth $0.075 in 2022. So, in my view rimfire is a better bargain now than it was 52 years before.

To add to the conversation, my "retirement" salary in 2022 was 10 times more than my "regular" job salary in 1970. If I was still employed in 2022 I would estimate that my salary would have been about 14 times more.

I realize that this is an oversimplification. Nevertheless, I'm not complaining.

.22 LR is $42 / 500 even at cheapammo. The good old days are gone.
