This morning was a delightful morning. A cold front had come through and the morning was raining and chilly. Nita was still asleep, I had finished my morning's devotions and Bible reading and had just finished my first cup of morning coffee. Then, the house went dark.

I got a flashlight and reported the outage, then got into the Jeep and drove around to see what might be the trouble. My block was dark, and a nearby traffic light was dark. Then I saw a pickup truck, up against a utility pole. A second call to the power company assured me power would be restored by 11:00 a.m. (It was about 7:45 then.)

Well, make the best of it. Coffee was still hot in the pot, so have another cup and kick back in the recliner. I set my still steaming coffee cup down, and pushed the button to extend the recliner and.....................nothing!

Yeah, one of the features we wanted in our new couch was push-button operation, Nita's arm strength being what it was............


Lest y'all worry, power was restored by 8:10 a.m. this morning.

A UPS? What in the world is that, other than a parcel delivery service?

My water heater is gas, as is our kitchen range and floor furnaces. As to my TV, its sort of a respite to not have it. We can cook, though we can't light the oven. The range uses electronic ignition, but we can light the burners with a match. Can't reach the oven, though.

A UPS is an “Uninterrupted Power Supply.” It’s a large battery. I use one on my computer, when the electricity goes out, it gives me time to save any work and shut down the computer safely.

We had a storm here in Dallas a couple years ago our power was off for about 3 days. Thankfully it wasn’t hot. I used my UPS to charge my phone, and we enjoyed some new restaurants.

Back in Jersey we had a storm and our neighborhood didn’t have power for around 5 days.

A UPS is about the size of two large dictionaries. I doubt you want one for your easy chair.

I have experienced some momentary outages recently. Not enough to stop a number of more modern things like my computer, but stopping my (25 year old?) bread machine mid-cycle, with no way of completing. I've been able to transfer the dough to pans and continue in the oven, but it is very annoying.

Yep it happened at our house both the wife and myself in the recliner when the power went out we looked at each other and laughed till we cried. Neither of us could get the chairs down.

My wife bought a real expensive leather couch with reclining seats a few years back and the sales person claimed it would work with the power off... wrong. I have looked at it and the motors run off 6 volts dc and I've been tempted to install a good size 6 volt battery with a good trickle charger hooked to it.

Generac kicks in about 30 seconds after a power failure. All electrics work proper. When power is restored, the change from generator is automatic & un-noticeable.

Yep. Installed an 'all house' generator years ago. Power goes out and 30 seconds later the gen fires up an I have power to everything. A couple years ago we lost power here and it ran for 56 straight hours. Everyone else was filling the gas tanks on their portables. Well worth the initial cost for us 'older' people. Unfortunately, if you live in the city or an apartment you can't always do this.
