How is NVB-444-SPCL / 5232 recoil?

It depends on what you are shooting through it. A cowboy load is pleasant however the 7.5 gr Unique "Skeeter" load is all you want with the cheesegrater grips.
It's a great gun and cartridge that you will instantly like.

I just bought a NVB-445-SPCL 5233 (5-1/2" bbl .44 SPL) a few weeks ago and for my tastes, the factory grips are too thin. Their size and also not being wood makes them a bit uncomfortable in my hand than my other Blackhawks... but, I can always buy or whip up a pair that suit me better.
I was shooting "Cowboy" ammo (the only commercially loaded ammo available in my area), so recoil was much more mild than a .357 Magnum and not a problem. With a better set of grips it/you will be able to handle the more energetic stuff decently.
Nonetheless, I still think it is a definite winner... if I find myself with the need to sell off something in a financial emergency, this one will be among the last to go.

The 5.5" Bisley is a favorite of the wife, think petite. The Skeeter load is all she's ever handled. She is not a fan of recoil.
A standard-loaded .44 Special is a powder puff out of these guns.
And as far as the slim grip frame and cheese grater grips? That's exactly what I hoped for when Ruger reintroduced the Flattop and the original grip frame dimensions. My thought? If a feller doesn't like the XR-3 grip frame, then I guess a Super Blackhawk with the XR-3 Red grip frame is in order. Then ya lose the benefit of the smaller sized Flattop altogether.
Everybody's got their own idea of what's best for them, including me.

I personally think this frame size is the best Ruger has ever produced. My absolute favorite shooting single action is a stainless (high gloss) 4 5/8" New Vaquero in 44 special. The only modification I made was to put in a SBH hammer (which I do on all my keeper guns) and change off the black grips, that I thought were a little uncomfortable with stout loads, to a smooth factory faux ivory grips. The result is a good looking awesome shooter! My 63 year old arthritic hands can deal with just about anything I feed it.
I do wish it was offered in a 32-20 as well.

I've got both a .357 Anniversary Flattop and one of the early Lipsey's .44 Specials, and love 'em both, although I swapped out the black "cheesegrater" grips on both guns for wood (Bearpaw black walnut "gunfighter"-style grips for the .357; Ruger rosewoods for the .44).
Of the two, the Lipsey's .44 is my favorite; it will do everything the .357 will and is more pleasant to shoot.
Just scored another .44 Special flattop, this one a lightly-used 5 1/2" Bisley, but it already came with nice rosewood stocks from the factory. So I doubt I'll make any changes there... :lol:
