I'll share an embarrassing story on myself with hope it'll be a reminder for others.
Friday night we clicked on the furnace for the first time as temps dipped to about 35. Furnace is only 3 or 4 years old.
About noon the carbon monoxide detector in the basement was chirping. I changed the batteries and .... more chirping. Our house is 3 floors so we have these and smoke detectors on each floor but only the one nearest the furnace was making noise. Just to be safe I called my nephew who is a partner in the HVAC company that installed my gas forced air furnace.
He asked me to check the manufacture date on the unit. :oops: Oops ..... 2012! In checking all the others, they're all 2003 (yikes!) or 2012.
On his recommendation me and the Mrs. visited Home Depot for Kidde or Night Hawk brand units with the digital read-out. Yeah, they're about $40 each and I've got almost $200 spent but ..... none of the new units register any problems.
So as a reminder .... don't just change the batteries twice a year .... check the dates too! These new products have a 10-year sealed battery included so the whole unit is a throw-away in 10!
