Holster Rescue or Why I Never Throw Anything Away

People like Matabele, who have talent, do beautiful leather work. Some of us just get by. :D This is a Bucheimer holster that I bought new in 1968 for a Ruger .357 BlackHawk w/6 1/2" barrel. Of course it fit my new .44 Special BlackHawk perfectly except for a few problems.

It was too long. I cut it off and riveted the stitched side. The photo lies (because of the angle) I cut it off perfectly straight.

The FlatTop's rear sight is SHARP and also prone to get banged up here on the farm. As issued, the Bucheimer did not protect the rear sight, so I cut a piece of leather to protect the sight and had our bootmaker sew it onto the holster. I re-dyed the whole thing. I've worn it for a few days and scratches in the leather are appearing, but the 44 is pretty well protected.

Probably part of the reason I never got rid of it. In the 60s and 70s there were far fewer choices for left-handers in leather, firearms, etc ... than there are today.

You're right about that rear sight being sharp...I've got the scars on my right forearm to prove it. Hot weather here in KY means short sleeved shirts except when carrying any of my flat tops. Good mod on the holster...I've copied the pic to file, and may build one later this spring. Attaboy! Rod
