I have a Ruger Mark IV 4.4” barrel. I’d like to get a holster and wondering what this expert group recommends.

Thanks in advance!

Holster choices can be subjective.

What purpose is the holster to be used for? CCW? Hunting? General range work? Daily farm carry?

The one thing I discovered over decades of all types of use & abuse,, is to get a holster that FITS the gun. Generic nylon one-size-fits-all usually is a very poor choice.

Quality leather, is still preferred for most uses. Kydez has it's place for some applications.

A good holster will allow you to carry a gun securely,, AND be comfortable.

Safariland 578 GLS Pro-Fit is a This is a top-tier recommendation.

It's very secure, intuitive, and the holster is high-quality. You would order the model sized for a "4-5 inch barrel" and it will fit your railed Mark IV perfectly.

For leather options, check out both Tandemcross and Ruger websites for their offered choices.

Great info. It would be for general range work. Just looking for something that fits this particular firearm well

Not an expert but this works well for me.

One of the few things gun shows still have going for them is holsters. Lots of leather and kydex options, but the leather ones will be $$$$. We have several guys here in the D/FW area who do custom Kydex that can make anything you want and are reasonable. I have also had good luck with Versa Carry and Urban Carry.

I’ve got two leather holsters for my MK IV, one off the Ruger website, one from a leather crafter on Etsy. Both get the job done.

Ruger holster is strong side belt holster. Etsy holster is chest holster.

I had a guy ask me last night about a holster. He was looking for a GOOD quality holster to carry a heavy handgun, in a cross chest design.
I happened to be near my truck,, and took him out to see mine.
A Barranti NW Hunter model. I has my El Dorado 7-1/2" bbl gun in it. I had him slip the holster on, then put the gun back in it. I told him to actually move around, and especially bend over like he was picking something up. When the gun stayed put, didn't flop around, and such,, he stood up, IMPRESSED,, and wanted to know more.
I simply said; "Quality isn't cheap, but when it works like it needs to,, it's worth every penny."
He's now looking at his options,, and wanted "Doc's" info.

A holster that fits, AND works as intended is worth every penny, no matter the cost.

I probably have between 75 & 100 holsters just hanging in my closet. Yet,, VERY few get used. I do have a selection of them I use to teach people when I have a class,, but most never get used anymore.

As mentioned, your specific use and budget parameters should dictate your selection process.
I'm not a holster conny-sewer and lean toward practicality/versatility rather than appearance. I use mostly KYDEX holsters for concealed carry. Otherwise, it's whatever fits and suits the use of the handgun.
I have lots of Uncle Mikes nylon holsters for daily on the farm use. Sturdy and do a good job of protecting the handgun.

Make SURE whatever you get fits your use and carry requirements. What might work fine while at the range may also be a PITA when driving. Personally I make my own holsters and after design and build I have trashed a number of them that weren't 'just right' for my intended use.

Here's one that I made up for my Mkll ten years or so ago. I lined it with vegetable tanned, pig skin and fitted it tightly on a 1-1/2" leather utility belt...also of my own construction. At first glance you'd think that patridge front sight would hang up during the draw movement...but it doesn't!!.

This one fits tightly, tight enough that it doesn't need a keeper strap for retention, and as this is a .22, there's no chance that I'll ever be carrying the gun for protection where a hasty draw movement might be necessary. I like it a lot, just wish I'd have stitched in a flapped pocket for a spare magazine. In use summer and winter, it hugs the hip (OWB) tightly at my 4:00 belt position.

El Paso Saddlery makes a similar one....of first rate construction....& not cheap, but if you take care of it, your kids will appreciate it as much as you will. Best regards, Rod
