The Air Force had hoped to begin retiring its 281 A-10s starting in 2015. But Congress blocked the effort. Now the A-10 is safe even as the Air Force considers retiring other plane types.

The Mrs. and I had the pleasure of watching A-10's in action a few years ago while fishing in our canoe. There was a Navy bombing range near-by, and they were practicing strafing runs with their mini guns. Beautiful, cloudless sky, and I forgot all about the fishing!

For us Cavalry folks, and others like us that slept in the mud, we have an affinity for low and slow. I know slow is relative, but Cobra's, A-1's, and later, A-10's fill the requirement.

Having had the chance to see them in operation I would not want to be a "bad guy" on the ground anywhere. That is one AWSOME critter when on the offensive. If on the ground in anything from a Hilux to a tank you're in trouble if they are around.

Last I heard was that they are repairing/modifying/strengthing the wings and now they are not set to "retire" until at least 2030. Lots of fight left in them 'hogs.

The last A-10 was delivered in 1984.

Yep looked pretty cool. Also the 75th Fighter Squadron with the Tiger Shark is the only USAF Squadron authorized to use it since it is a carry over from the past.

The 75th Fighter Squadron (75 FS) is a United States Air Force unit. It is assigned to the 23d Fighter Group, Air Combat Command and stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. The squadron is equipped with the Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II attack fighter.

During World War II, the 75th Fighter Squadron was one of the three original squadrons (74th, 75th, 76th) of the 23rd Fighter Group.

On 17 December 1941, the AVG 2nd Fighter Squadron was redesigned as the 23rd Pursuit Group 75th Pursuit Squadron and subsequently the 75th Fighter Squadron

What makes the A-10 an outstanding ground support plane is the Guy sitting in the seat. He has been trained 100% in ground support. The guy sitting in the pointy nose jet not so much. Must be why the guys on the ground want the A-10
A friend of mine who is retired USAF flew them for quite a few years along with other jets and he said he would rather fly it then any other jet.
What surprised me was it is also very capable of dogfighting.
He surprised a lot of the pointy nose guys in ACM Training.
