Reliability is the difference. The Walther p22, while a dandy little pistol, is a bit more finicky about ammo, in my experience. This new Ruger ate everything I fed to it.

I have experience with only one of these, but this one has perfect reliability. Ruger will probably have several of these at the SHOT Media Day in a couple of weeks, and there will be hundreds of shooters giving them a workout.

Thanks for the review and I look forward to some of the folks on this forum getting their hands on one and running 'em through their paces too.

With the Mark pistols in Ruger's lineup, I am curious. What are they marketing this pistol as? Is it a thriftier shooting alternative to the SR centerfire pistols much like GSG 22lr 1911?

Very interesting. I had a Walther P22 which I did not care for.
Maybe it was just me but I thought that the gun was ugly.
Also, I injured myself twice pulling back on the slide due to
the sharp rear sight.
I smoothed out the sight corners profile and that helped.
But I just did not love the gun enough to keep it.

I must be careful or I might end up with one of these little gems.

My P22 was very reliable for the first 500 rounds or so, then it started jamming. I cleaned it very well, and it functioned fine for about 50 rounds, then started jamming, after that no amount of cleaning would make it reliable for a whole magazine. I had almost the same experience with the Mosquito.

Sweet little pistol I'm sure, but I have to admit I just don't get it. For a target pistol it will never match any MK for accuracy. As a defensive gun???, The LCP and LC9's are smaller and offer a LOT more knockdown power.
I'm sure they'll sell a ton but I just keep asking WHY?

Even though it looks A lOT like the P22, I kind of like it. I had a P22 for a short time but sold it because it was very particular on ammo, which apparently is a common problem. May have to have one eventually.

I like it because while it may look a little like the P22, there are dramatic differences. The stainless steel barrel is held in place by a bolt through the bottom into the barrel. It has an aluminum slide with steel insert that contains the important parts, and a steel insert in the poly frame that holds the hammer and trigger. It is an easy assembly gun to field strip and put back together, and this is much unlike the P22 that if I remember correctly was a bit of a pain. Per the test it is also NOT ammo fussy, unlike the P22. A VAST improvement I think.

FIRST, let's get one in hand. We learned our lesson (again) with the SR1911.

THEN let's shoot the thing. Extensively. For accuracy.

And then we'll know.


BTW, I've got a P22 and it is (appears) smaller, reliable, and head-shot accurate to boot. It's going to be hard to replace for an afternoon woods stroll.

Well acrylictnk has them listed in the Classifieds and I got #2 on the list. Should be a great trail gun for where a 22LR is enough and also for a good time plinking. A great review by Jeff and I'm sure I will be happy when I get it.

They will sell a bunch of them because the vast majority of casual gun owners love a nice little 22 plinker not to mention the guys who go "Black" on every gun they own. I wouldn't hesitate to own one if I needed a light lil trail gun even though I much prefer good ol' fashioned steel.

I like the looks. It's price should also put a squeeze on the Walther P22, as they used to be pretty reasonable, but they keep jumping in price - I see them on the shelf at $350-375 all the time, which I think is high for a plastic pistol.

That is absolutely not true.
While there are a couple of gun companies that send out ringers, Ruger does not do so. This I know from experience, and also from talking with other writers.

It seems like they rush models onto the market before all the bugs are worked out. Think of all the models lately that have experienced recalls or problems that have had to be addressed.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Ruger guns and my first gun was a Ruger MK1 pistol and I still buy Rugers. I also like that they are releasing all these new models which is nice but maybe they should be given more of a trial run before they're released.

I have no inside information on this, but I do believe that Ruger recalls weapons that most manufacturers would not. Ruger seems to go beyond what other makers do to make certain that their weapons will work reliably, even with the cheapest junk ammo on the market, when other makers would simply tell the consumer to use better ammo. I know that Ruger has in the past send shipping boxes to me to return a firearm that had no problem at all.

Also, Ruger sells more guns than does any other maker. Just as you would expect more people to have a problem with a Ford than there are people who have a problem with a Lotus. Going by percentages, I think that Rugers have no more problems than do other maker's guns. However, if the folks at Ruger think that there is one LCP out there that MIGHT fire if dropped from a helicopter, they are going to want to look at every one that they have shipped up to that point, and bring the assembly line to a screeching halt until they figure out what happened.

I love my Ruger handguns and they have never given me a problem due to a manufactor defect although now I've probally jinxed myself. I want an SR22 because I like plinking. We always pull out the 22's after we get done shooting the big guns and a Ruger 22 pistol would be perfect. I would gamble on a Ruger! Anybody want to trade for a LCP?
