I went to a gun show today. Bought two zipper cases and a pocket knife.

I saw a familiar character there. He's a WW II veteran, a short, slight built man with short cropped graying hair. He's always wearing one of those explorer's vests and carrying a canvas knapsack. And in each pocket of the vest, and in the bag, are revolvers. These guns are the less expensive makes, such as Iver Johnson, H&R, and maybe at times a top break S&W. I commented to him that I believed he had more revolvers on him than were on display at the show.

He told me he had to renew his Tennessee Handgun carry permit recently and he went in person. He was told he could renew for eight years for fifty dollars, or get a lifetime permit for two hundred dollars.

His response was: "I'll be ninety one Friday. Eight years is a lifetime permit for me."

I didn't find much there at the show, but I did get to talk to and meet some mighty nice folks.

My best WWII vet story is about a gentleman I met in the check out line at a local grocery store. He was wearing a ball cap with the Navy Cross on it. I told him I knew that was the Navy Cross. He told me his Grand children bought it for him so he had to wear it.

Only later did I realize I had been talking to Col. Rex T. Barber. He only lived a few blocks from my house. If I had known who he was I would have asked him if the story about Charles Lindberg helping him with advice on fuel management while making a very special long distance over-water flight was true.
