Grip frame question 11/24 A ton of pics added

“Dragoon” style with square back trigger guard; no marking, some observed with a letter such as an “A”; about 300 early frames were ¼” longer than the standard frame, known today as “long frames.”
So for my question. What is the measurement of a regular dragoon?

Yes I know the grips are wrong, but that's what came on the gun. They also don't fit.....not even close

It's only one size,, known as the Super Blackhawk one. I don't have one in front of me to give actual measurements.
But if looking for grips,, just look for Super Blackhawk ones.

The standard SBH grip frames measure 1 11/16” (22/32”) from center of screw hole to bottom of grip frame.

Long frames measure 1 27/32” at that same location, 5/32” longer than the standard SBH grip frame.

Long frame grips are both stamped with a ‘C’ on the back side. Standard SBH grip height is 3 ¼”. Add 5/32” and that makes the long frame grip 3 9/32”.

We need a picture of the whole grips and how they fit on the grip frame. You only show about 2/3 of the grips and grip frame in your picture. One other bit of advice. Please steady the camera and try to focus a little better. That will make it a lot easier to find out what you have.

It is possible I guess with the SR# of 1399 the grips that are on it have the SR eagle. and are about 1/8" short on both the top and bottom.
On my next visit I will try and get better pics and measure it.
The book says that is a dull finish. But it sure looks shinny to me??

The SR siver eagle grips didn't come out until ~1971. All long frames were made in the 1959 serial range up to 1463, therefore the correct grips can only have the black eagle.

The term dull finish is relative. It's the standard shiny finish of all Rugers at the time, just not as shiny as the era of the "high polish" shine SBH finish in the 3431 to 8650 serial range beginning in Aug 1960. Only one high polish long frame #1525 was shipped in this period and obviously a 'late shipper'.

Oh Boy it would be hard to put a price on it for me because your chances of finding correct grips is very slim you would have to have custom grips made but then again it is a long frame and how bad someone wanted one I think if I didn't have one and saw one for under $800 I would thinking on it pretty hard just my opinion I will probley catch hell for saying that

Hard to see exact measurement if you measure from the flat on the grip frame where the top of the grip panel fits against it to the bottom of the grip frame a short frame will measure 3 1/4 a long frame will measure 3 3/8 from what I see in your pictures you have a short frame or(standard frame) with new model grips that someone reworked a little to far this is just my opinion I hope I'm wrong

Put your glasses on Gramps :lol: :lol: That pic clearly shows the measurement to be 3 3/8" just as you say it should be for a large frame :wink: :wink:

Way I read this is 3 and 14/32" 14/32" = 7/16" or 1/16" over 3/8"

Now that looks good I could not see where you had that hook on the end of the tape I hate those hooks when you need an exact reading Congratulations its a long frame :D :D I hope you worked out a deal to own it
