As far as Ruger revolvers go, you can't go wrong starting off with the iconic hand canon, a nice used Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum with the iconic 7.5" barrel (the best shooters too). These are plentiful and if you keep your eye out locally, can be had for 500 and less with a little fancy dickering.

Even GB has them shipped for under 500 bones. Local even better deals can be had, especially if you live in a decent sized city.
Here's a couple that went for under 500 shipped in the last week, one even yesterday.
