Given the choice..................

Just walked back into the office from a visit to Cabela's. The had in stock a brand new Alaskan and a brand new 4" Redhawk.
Given the choice, calibers being equal of course, I am pretty sure I would have taken the Redhawk over the Alaskan. It just seemed to feel better, point better and to me anyway, had better balance. I don't need either, as I already have a 4" Model 29 and a 4 5/8"
Super Blackhawk. The Alaskan was $949 and the Redhawk was $929, way over priced in my opinion. Let me know your thoughts on which you would have chosen.

I would have chosen to walk away at those prices.

But ...... the Alaskan is worth closer to it's asking price than the regular Redhawk in my opinion.

I'd have had to take the Redhawk; I prefer their feel (except I prefer the feel of the 5.5" like my personal 44, except I prefer my 7.5" version in 357 Magnum).

I like the Supers for the way the lockworks are made (two springs) and how they shoot but prefer the looks of the Standard RH. Your choice. They are both great guns.

When it comes to shooter comfort and heavy loads, the SRH is a more pleasureable experience.

I would have selected the 4.2" Redhawk, but not at those prices. I prefer a slightly longer barrel than
2.5" and Herretts makes some decent grips for them. From what RH's are going for on Gun Broker it
appears that about$750-765 is the going rate and not too much more for Alaskans in .44. Also, my
dealer quoted around $750 so think Cabela's is MSRP.

for my use as a woods gun, i'd go with the SRH along with the springs, comfort, etc.......but that's just me.

Cabelas does keep the price way high compared to other sources available. But if they have it and you want it.... It`s only paper!!

Agreed....Too much velocity loss to suit me. I see you also like playing cards for targets. Aim small, miss small, and a load that can't stay on a card @ 25 yds won't be duplicated anyway! :wink:

I had all kinds examples in mind for picking one or the other, but I erased them.

In a nutshell, for what I do, I believe the Alaskan is the better choice.

I like them both and have both. Cabelas tends to be high in price by a little but if they have one and you want it, there aren't too many stores you will walk into that have both to choose from. It's what I call a canundrum. Frankly the Alaskan in 44 is probably the easiest to find, and I have one in 44 and one in 454 I like them both. That way I don't have to choose.

The Rock is shooting the 454 not the 44. I think He'll easily see 1000 fps. For most things 900 fps and the right bullet is plenty in the lower 48.
