Ghost Rocket Disappointment

Well, I spent the night fitting and installing a Ghost Rocket in my SR9 full size, but was'nt happy with the results. I already had a Ghost Ultimate installed and a polish job (Thank you Josh Hearne!) and a home made overtravel stop on the frame behind the trigger similar to the one on Dave Spauldings SR9 as seen on the Handgun Fundamentals video on Rugers website. This setup gave me an incredible trigger but took me out of stock service pistol and put me in enhanced service pistol class in IDPA. The reason for the rocket was to move me back to stock service class. After installing it, the trigger felt heavier than the ultimate and to me the stop felt sort of....spongy is the only way I can describe it.

Now please understand, I'm not trying to bash Ghost products. As I said, I love the Ultimate. And they have a great return policy, however, because I filed down the TCT I dont think it's returnable. So, the reason for my post is this, I don't know anyone else with an SR9. If anyone here is interested in giving it a try, be my guest. The first person to PM me with an address gets a free Ghost Rocket mailed to them on Monday. You may have to do some additional filing, but the length is just right for my pistol.
I, of course, take no responsibility for what you do with your pistol. Any takers?

I don't know much about IDPA. From what I can tell in your post, a trigger mod does not bump you up a class, but a frame mod does. Correct? That's too bad that it didn't work out for you. I believe the return policy works even once you've filed on the TCT. It'd be worth checking out if that's the route you'd like to take. I'm by no means trying to discourage you from sending it out for someone else though.

The guys at Ghost inc stand behind their products. I spoke with Arthur (The Owner) before I got my ghost rocket and he said they have a no questions asked money back guarantee, no matter what. I'm sure he will take good care of you with your issue.

Arthur's a good guy, they'll probably try and replace it first, but ultimately, if you just want your money back, you'll likely get it.

Hey Kyle, PM received. I've got some other stuff going out in the mail Monday morning so I'll send it out then. You're correct about IDPA. The only outwardly visable mods you can make in SSP are to the grips and sights within limits. ESP mods are more liberal. I really don't mind shooting in ESP in fact I kind of get a kick out of it when (on my better days) I can keep pace with the 1911 9MM guys with my lowly Ruger. I keep bouncing back and forth between trying to go stock and going full blown custom with all the goodies from Galloway Precision. As far as Ghost is concerned, y'all are right. Arthur is a great guy and they might refund the money, but there was'nt really anything wrong with the part, it just was'nt to my taste. I figure if one of the members here can get some use out of it more power to them and good karma for me.

If you really want a better trigger, go with the Galloway when it becomes available for sale.

Sounds good, Gun Fan. I appreciate your generosity. Eric at Galloway is a great guy to work with too, and although I've never tried his trigger parts, if Josh says they're that great, I'd be willing to bet on 'em.

Difference in amount of noticed improvement is night and day. YMMV of course. When your average target bullet pattern goes from peppered shotgun pattern to a ragged hole you stop and take notice.

With respect to your Ghost Rocket installation, it sounds very much like you need to file another .005" off the trigger control tab. I have the Rocket installed on both my SR9 and SR9C and they are outstanding. If the TCB is just a bit too long though, the gun will still fire, but the trigger will feel a bit heavy at the end and "mushy" as you pull harder on the trigger as it pushes against the TCB. In essence, you have started to stop the trigger too early and the mushiness and heavy trigger that you feel is the additional resistance to overcome and force the trigger bar to release as it is pushing against the TCB.

Try to take some more off the TCB. I had the same feeling for my SR9C when I first installed it. If fired, but it felt heavy and mushy at the end. I then took another .005" off and it is great now. Nice, crisp, easy trigger with very short pull, and a very quick reset.

Both of my triggers now are, to me, just about perfect. Others that shoot Glocks, M&Ps, XDMs agree that the triggers on the SR9s with the Rocket are much better than theirs (maybe the grass is always greener on the other side?). Even the 1911 guys like it. I have tried their guns and I agree.

In any event, try it. If you take too much off, Ghost will give you a new Rocket for free.

Good luck.

PS: Another thing other shooters say is that they love the stock SR sights.

I agree with robilmichael. I'd try taking a hair more off the TCT and trying again. I've been very happy with my Rocket installation. And, if for some reason the install goes south, Ghost, Inc. will take care of you.

Trigger kits should start shipping Thursday or Friday. Go ahead and order end of this week. Should be shipping Josh a pre and over travel eliminator shortly to review. Anyone has any questions feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks for the tips guys. That sounds exactly like what I had so I probably needed to take off a little more. Maybe Kyle will have some better results. I've gone back to my before set up with the Ghost Ultimate which I thought was perfect. Maybe I just had it in my head that I was'nt going to like anything as well, so I did'nt have the patience to work out the Rocket. At any rate, I appreceiate the advice and hope others will benifit from it as I did. I'm really glad I found this forum. It's nice to talk guns with people who share an interest in Rugers.

Agreed with robilmichael and Grendel on taking a touch more off the TCT. I experienced the same issue, then took some more off the TCT and got it feeling much better. That being said, if you're wanting to trick it all the way out, go for Galloway's kit. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
