Galligher Ruger

In a LGS this past week I ran across a single action Ruger John Galligher custom Blackhawk in .44 mag. Beautiful gun, showed not much sign of having been fired, great action and trigger, at a price of $699.

I was sorely tempted. Only problem is, I have a Old Model Bisley Vaquero in .44 magnum with a Bob Munden action job that I bought a few years ago at the same gun shop, so I have that base pretty well covered.

I have not compared them side by side, but my in-shop impression handling the Galligher is that the Munden trigger has the slightest of edges. Both are wonderful. and the Gallighger has a beautiful, flawless matte blue finish on a
frame that I would describe as a matte nickel with the slightest hint of bronze in it. Unfortunately, my Munden has the factory original fake color case hardened finish.

As a side note, my old slightly arthritic hands cannot tolerate the .44 magnum standard loads in the relatively lightweight Vaquero any more, so it is as a practical matter now a wonderfully accurate .44 Special. A large, heavy Magnum Research Shorty is the only thing I fire .44 magnum in anymore.

If the Galligher was chambered in .44 Special it would already live at my house.

Wow, that seems a great deal. If it were in 45 Colt I'd have to give them a call.

For clarity -- is the gunsmith John Gallagher (with an "a", of Jasper, Alabama), or John Galligher (with an "i")?

And I would highly recommend buying that sixgun. I have 4 different Gallagher-built Rugers, and they are superb. The man knows his way around a Blackhawk.

A suggestion. I have a .44 mag I don't need or want to shoot even reduced power mag loads in, for a few reasons, but I do want to shoot it. Just got done grinding the carbon rings out of the chambers from a previous owner shooting a steady diet of .44 Specials without proper cleaning afterwards, so I am loading .44 Special power level ammo in .44 mag length brass. So far seems to be the answer to my situation.
