Found some ammo my SR22 doesn't like.

I've been feeding several different brands of ammo through my new SR22P and all was well until I tried out some Winchester Super X. With that I had several cases of failure to extract or fail to load. The stuff just doesn't seem to have the steam to reliably operate the slide enough for strip a round off the magazine. I also tried other brands I had right after those failures, Federal Target Grade, Federal bulk, and some CCI and all fed perfectly. BTW - this pistol just gets better as I use it. My groups are becoming smaller as I shoot it. Not quite ready to try it on Bullseye shooting but who knows? I love it's light weight.

I have read a few posts with the same conclusion on the Super X in semi autos including the SR22. To think years ago that used to be their good ammo.

I've had the same problem with any Winchester ammo in my wife's Browning Buck Mark. Feed it CCI, Federal, Remington and it's happy. The Winchester ammo now gets fed to the SA's.

Is is standard or subsonic? Subsonic has not been good on semis in my experience. Not that I disagree with the other posters as far as winchester being lower on the list anyway. they have a new load that is supposed to be made to function in modern capacity magazines and autoloaders. Haven't tried that yet, it's on my list.

I have an older SP101 22 that the SuperX ammo is a snug fit in the chambers. It has tight chambers. I'm not home right now to measure things, but I wonder if the SuperX stuff might just have an exta bit of wax on the bullets. I hadn't thought about it until I read this post. I didn't have any trouble with them feeding in my Mk I or my 10 22, but I have to push them hard to get them in my SP. Just a thought.

I shot the Super X 37gr plated hollow points and 40gr plated round nose through my SR22P with no problems.The only rounds that gave me problems were the Remington Golden Bullet plated hollow points.What does this prove?
Even the same guns of a manufacturer and model series have different ammo preferences.

Hard to say what it proves. Could be differences in the batch of ammo, could be differences in the pistols. What will prove something is if enough of us report problems with the same kind of ammo in the SR22.

I guess that it proves that one particular batch of one particular brand isn't the best choice on that particular day. The good news is that we have a lot of choices and 22's are fun and cheap to shoot.

I found some ammo my new SR22 does not like, and I do not like it either. I have one of those 525 round boxes of Green/Yellow Remington .22LR that I have shot about 300 rounds of... with 3 case failures!

By this I mean the rim on the back of the case has failed and has blown away or has been shredded. I'll have to take a few pics. I am glad I always wear safety glasses!

On inspection nothing wrong with the gun. Just had to clean it very well, especially the mags as they had a lot of powder residue on them.

It was a bit surprising, after 1,000s of rounds of all types of .22 in a variety of different guns over the years I have never had this happen before.

One of the guys at my gun club had a similar thing happen in his Browning Buckmark during Bullseye shooting. The rim ruptured and blew the extractor off the pistol. Same kind of ammo.

We went out and put about 300 rds through the SR22 this weekend and had some feed problems. We were using Winchester Xpert 22 from Wal-Mart. We never had a failue to fire or eject BUT about every 10 rds we would not feed the next round. I was assuming there was not enough powder to push the slide back far enough the grab the next round??


I also had the first real chance to shoot a couple of boxes through my SR9c. This is a AWESOME pistol. Just kept getting better and better.

I have a High Standard Sentinel that doesn't like any brand of outside-lubed ammo. Only the plated stuff drops in. Tight chambers.

I shot another 550 rounds or various brands and coatings through my SR22P last Sunday. The only conclusion I have come to is that the gun doesn't like lead non plated bullets. Plated bullets do fine.

Don't own a SR22 but the Walther P22 didn't like the lower power ammo (like Fed bulk) but loved CCI36gr plated and Stingers. It would occasionally fail to fully eject or just didn't grab the next round. But now after 2000 or so rounds it pretty much shoots anything I load. I believe it needed to break in and probably the spring lost a little tension after some use. My experiance is simular with other models and would presume it would be the case with the SR.

22 LR can be picky eaters.. I have had great success with CCI 40 grain subsonics, though

I have discovered it is a good thing to have a .22 revolver and a 22 bolt action for the ammo your semis don't like

The only ammo that has given me problems in my SR22 is an old bulk box(500 or525 rounds)of Winchester Xpert.I say old because ther is a price tag on it that says $8.99.

I have found that Remington 22 ammo is by far the worst. It's the only ammo that I have had trouble with. FTF, FTE, duds. In many different guns. It simply is junk. Never a problem with bulk Federal or Winchester X through thousands of rounds of each in two different handguns and 3 rifles. But you can almost always count on one failure per magazine with remington.

Remington hasn't made an acceptable product in 30+ years. When you call them on it, they just want you to send it in so they can check it, and then send you more junk. They won't give a refund!
