First No.1 and Disappointed

Well, I bought my first No.1 Yesterday. It had to be mail ordered, so I had to pay in advance.

When we opened the box (The company waited to open the box until I arrived), the clerk helping me noticed a scope ring that had fallen out of its plastic package. I then found a ding in the forearm where the scope ring had banged against the stock. I put the rifle back in the case and took it home (It was just a small ding). I figured no big deal, now I don't have to worry about my first ding.

When I got home I looked at the rear rib, and the first thing I noticed is that the split contour on the front of the rear rib was not even on each side, then I looked at the rear of the front sight and noticed the same thing.

Looking more at the rib I noticed that it appears to have brass pushed into the contour lines that run down the top of the rib, some of the blue on the rib was splotchy, and right in front of the ear scope mount (where there is a pin [not sure of exact function]), you can see white metal where it appears someone slightly buttered around the hole and I could see a little metal in the white that appeared to be from the impact of an object during assembly.

I then looked the forearm over one more time and noticed that it was not just one small ding from the scope ring, but at least 4 dings.


I am very disappointed. I halfway feel like I am being overly critical, but this is a $1000.00 Rifle.


So what should I do? Contact Customer Service? Should I just suck it up? Am I being overly critical?

I would contact customer service and send it back. I have purchased two over the years, one new and a second used and was pleased with both of them. For the coin they are going for, you should be pleased with the rifle. Not sending it back may eat at your enjoyment of the gun. It would eat at me.

Contact Customer Service; they will make it right. Not quite sure how they will handle it from Germany though?

Charlie, I'd contact Ruger. I want it to be me that dings a gun up, not new from the factory. If you can live with it fine, I don't think I could. I'd try to let the dealer ship it back with a label from Ruger. Good luck!

Am I being overly critical about the Rear Rib and Front Sight? The center line of the bevel is off center.

I had the same problem with a Guide gun about 7 months ago. Got the thing home, noticed the the finish on the forearm was rubbed really bad in several places. At first, I thought I would just end up dinging it anyways. But, after a few minutes I thought the same thing, I should be the one that mars the finish, not some box it was packed in. I called their customer service and they had a new forearm to me in about 4 days.

I have no doubt Ruger will take care of you.

I will merely echo that Ruger will take care of you. I know I've bought two No. 1s in the last two years and they have been great, but I'm probably not as picky as some.

Being located in Germany, you'll probably be offered the same service as in Australia. Back to the importer who will either replace or refund you.

Those dings from a loose scope ring should not happen in a NIB rifle. The other conditions described certainly bespeak a failure of quality control at the factory but, frankly, they could well just be cosmetic. The combination, however, would make me wary that other screwups, not so evident, await you at the range woth this rifle.

My approach is that if there is something wrong with the gun I've bought and it bugs me, I've either got to correct it or I'll never get to like the gun. Don't know if that applies here. Just curious, does the rifle have the usual high polish blue or satin finish like the Hawkeye?

The Rifle is a No.1 RSI in 270 Win. Model 1363

The finish is blued, not the matt finish on the M77 Hawkeye's. The blue is not a deep rich lue like my S&W Model 19, The blue is similar to the blue on my father's M77/22 that was made in the late 80's/early 90's.

The thing I find odd is the trigger. It appears to have a krinkle coating on it like my Charger did right before Ruger went to the plastic trigger. I thought the trigger was plastic at first, but it does not have any molding lines that I can find.

Another update.

The Rifle just came back today. Very fast turn around with the holiday's. I was not figuring it would be back until the middle of January.

I have not been able to look at the rifle, as I am back in Germany now. My father said they replaced the forearm and rear rib. He said that the forearm and rib look good. He said that there are only too very small reblued dings on the barrel where the scratches used to be.

Ruger also test fired the rifle. Ruger said that the rifle shot 1" low and 1" right and was a 3/4" group.

Am I correct in my memory that ruger uses a 25 yard range for its test? That would make a 3" group at 100 yards. (I was hoping for better than 2"). Hopefully I can find an accurate (1.5 MOA or better) load for the rifle.

I think they use a 50 yard range. I'd be very surprised if it shot that bad for you though. Both of mine will shoot in the same hole at 25 yards and rarely go over an inch at 100 yards.
