I got my Beartooth Bullets fire lapping kit last week and last night started my fire lapping. I was expecting to need to fire 100+ rounds, but it is looking like it will be far less than that. Let me start my giving you a picture of my starting point:

I bought a used stainless RH Hunter in Aug 2010. That's .44 magnum with a 7.5 inch barrel. It shoots jacketed real fine. Most accurate load I have shot (99% of my shooting is at a 50 ft indoor range) is 210 gr JHP (XTP and Remmy bulk) over 27.5 gr H110/W296 and a CCI 350 primer. Scoped off bags at 50 ft, I can get almost all groups well under half inch and quite oten under a quarter inch. One evening I have back to back 5 round groups of .17 in. 1 inch at 75 yrds (again, scoped and rested) is not to difficult. I have only shot a few groups at 100 yds and those were around 1.25 to 1.5 inch. This gun will shoot.

The bore slugged at .430. Throats pin gauge (a minus set from Grizzly) at .432. I pin gauged the bore. A .416 slips muzzle to back of cylinder frame no problem. A .417 would only go 1/3 the way into the muzzle. I could see tool chatter marks on the lands both at the muzzle and just forward of the forcing cone.

I would get leading shooting cast (which is why I am fire lapping) and could feel constrictions and heavier leading both under the front sight and the barrel threads at the front of the frame. I size to .431. I search in vain for a load that would not lead. The best I could do was about 30 rds before lead fouling affected group size.

I made up 24 rounds of lapping bullets. I rolled them only about 15 seconds. I wiped my first one dry and could barely feel the abrasive. Nowhere near as much as 320 grit sandpaper. I decided to try leaving them "wet". My starting load was 3.2 gr Titegroup and a CCI 350. No filler. I wipe the nose of the bullet before seating them nose first. Excess paste fills the lube groove. I wipe the base of the bullet and the case after seating. I only did 4 cylinders, fearing stuck bullets. I had rolled 100 and did not want to have to mess with all of them being stuck in the bore, so these 24 were test rounds. I had ordered 300 bullets.

Following direction, I fired one cylinder at a time, followed by cleaning. I checked after each round for a stuck bullet, but had none. I stopped checking that after 4 cylinders. By the way, you really really need to make sure the chambers are squeaky clean. I had a couple of instances of a bit of abrasive left being and making it impossible to chamber.

I also pin gauged the bore between cylinders, starting after the second cylinder. After just 2 cylinders, the .417 pin gauge now would go in 90%! So I continued. I shot all 4 cylinders last night. Now the .417 gauge will go snugly past the front sight and falls through to the forcing cone, and then stops.

I loaded up another 24, but think I may not need that many. The tool marks near the muzzle are not as bad and the ones near the forcing cone are gone. I slugged the bore again this morning and it is still at .430.

I'll post follow-ups as I continue the project.
 
Good post! IMHO, a lot of people resort to fire-lapping before they even attempt to troubleshoot and diagnose the problems that they are experiencing. For instance, it seems fairly common for people to buy a random box of cast bullets, load them with any old load, and wonder why they lead. They never slug their bore or measure chamber throats; they don't take into consideration that commercial cast bullets are almost universally harder than woodpecker lips and lubed with crappy hard lube. Then they wonder why that load leads in that gun. "Oh, it must need to be fire-lapped!"

Epic fail.
 
Thanks, Enigma. I tried alloys of 10 BHN to 25 BHN. Sizes .430 and .431. Commercial cast (18 BHN, hard blue lube, .430 dia) and now casting my one (.431 dia, BAC lube).

I've got my 1911 shooting lead free.

I shot another 4 cylinders of lapping rounds tonight. I think I am 98% there. Just a bit pf snugness for the pin gauge passing the front sight (like a good fitting bullet in a cylinder throat), then the gauge free-falls to a spot just in front of the beginning of the lands. I'm pretty sure one more lapping session will do it.

Being impatient, I did shoot a few dozen full house rounds:

Clone of H&G #503 by MP Molds, water cooled to BHN 22
BAC lube
19.6 gr 2400
CCI 300

This load would lead up enough to affect group size in 20 rounds. After 48 rounds of fire lapping, I still had a small amount of leading. Group size was unaffected. What leading there was scrubbed out with Hoppe's #9 and a half dozen passes with a bore brush.

Update:

Over the past 2 week, I have continued to firelap. The round count is now 96 rounds. The .417 in gauge now drops from the muzzle and stops just where the forcing cone ends and the barrel begins. A little extra pressure gets the gauge into the cylinder opening in the frame. We are talking moderate finger pressure. My plan is one more cylinder of the 320 grit and one cylinder of 600 grit for polishing.

I shot 35 rounds of 256 gr #503 cast from an MiHec mold over 19.2 gr 2400 and a CCI 300 primer. 22-24 BHN. There were a few flakes of lead in the bore, mostly just forward of the forcing cone. Groups size was the same throughout.

I will probably start from scratch in working up loads after I finish.

I finished fire lapping tonight. I needed one more cylinder of the 320 grit for a total of 102 rounds. Now, the .417 gauge will pass the front sight with a little finger pressure, then falls free the rest of the way to the back of the cylinder frame. It seems I have removed the constriction and have a slight taper towards the muzzle.

My pin gauges are too long to insert starting at the forcing cone, so I can't measure there. Maybe I can somehow get a slug started from that direction, then drive it out with a brass rod from the muzzle. I think I'll worry about that if I still have leading when I get everything else taken care of.

I followed the 102 rounds of 320 grit with 12 rounds using 600 grit. The tool marks previously plainly visible on lands near the muzzle are now gone. I did the 600 grit because when I hit the 72 rd mark on the 320 grit, I did shoot a couple of cylinders of some of donaldjr1969's jacketed loads. I had a huge amount of copper fouling after that. Think "copper plated". I am guessing the roughness of the 320 grit did that. The bore was not as shiny as before I started, too. After the 600 grit, the bore is back to shiny.

I slugged the barrel twice when I got home and I am still at .430 groove diameter (actually .4298 to .4299, depending on the groove measured).

I shot a cylinder of donaldjr1969's Quality Cast 240 LSWC Keith-like bullets after the 600 grit. He loaded them over 19.2 gr 2400. He also gave them an Alox bath. I don't know about this particular lot, but ones that I had tried last year miked at .429. I think Don said he measured them at .430. They are bevel base and hard lubed and my throats are .432, so they leaded anyways, but not nearly as bad as I expected from this bullet in my gun.

Next step is to get a custom sizing die for my SAECO lubrisizer. I need a .432 and Redding does not offer that. In the meantime, maybe I can shoot as cast. My MP #503 casts .432 or .433, I think. I don't have any unsized ones right now. I have no idea what the as-cast diameter is for my MP 200 gr HP is. Guess I'll fire up the pot in the morning!

I plan on shooting the loads I have kept notes and pics on (before and after comparison), but really think I should go back to square one on working up loads.

So far so good. I know I have dramatically reduced leading. I don't know about accuracy, yet.

I think I would have quit there and bought another gun that didn't shoot as accurately to firelap! :lol: :wink:
 
To be honest, I did think about going that route. For several months. By the time I started, was not worried about wrecking it. Accuracy seems the same. I want to get some outdoor shooting at 50 and 75 yds next.
 
I lapped the frame constriction and warning label constriction out of my SBH Hunter with the Wheeler kit. I think the first 6 shots with the coarse grit really cut down the required number of rounds with the 320 and 600.

Shoots great now! No leading.
 
I've read a couple of articles now where guys firelapped a Ruger stainless revolver, and they said if they had to do it again they would have started right off the bat with the coarsest grit available because the stainless bores of those Rugers is hard as all get out. Seems like you found that out too, with the high round count required.
