Finally got another vehicle

After much searching and looking around and comparing, I finally located another vehicle after my Suburban was officially totaled. I put something like 2,000 miles on the rental car looking nearly every day for a decent truck or SUV and instead found most needing so much work versus what the asking price was it was laughable.

I looked at another Suburban that in the ad was given as running good, would pass inspection and only a little rust and was greeted after a 45 minute drive as wouldn't start, didn't run and had rot everywhere.
I then drove an hour plus to look at a Ford 4 x 4 that the owner must have used pictures of from the previous year because what he had was in need of new manifold gaskets, was rusted heavily and smelled like it was about to catch fire.
Saturday I went to look at a "good running" Dodge truck that steered awful (I owned two like it and they handled so much better) ran good and when I asked about the 4 wheel drive said it works great but it needed the front driveshaft. Monday was the last straw when I found a nice GMC Yukon online at a dealership about an hour south. I emailed them and made an appointment to test drive it. I get there, no Yukon. It had brake issues which they couldn't fix so they had to send it out. When I told the salesman/ owner I drove a long ways to look at it I got "You really should have called." I was then told it would be back yesterday and they would call me. No call ever came.

So I took the wife on Monday to look at a truck belonging to a 76 year old man who could no longer drive and was selling it because his knees were gone and he couldn't push the pedals anymore. It's a 93 GMC 1500 that has a 305 V8, auto and 108,000 miles. It needs a few things, brakes are spotty but it runs great and quiet and has lots of power. The body and frame are clean especially for a NY truck its whole life. Even though it's 2wd, the wife doesn't work as much, I rarely go that far and I am putting some studded tires on it tomorrow and getting chains. I am also looking for a cap for it. The flame paint job I can do without but it was done well a few years ago, the clear coat is coming off ,but there is no rust on it and it should do ok. I told the wife if it holds up and stays in nice shape over the years I would put it aside for my son for his first vehicle. She even likes it and she doesn't like riding in trucks. I got it for a bit over two grand and we kept the rest of the money from the insurance company to put away for a car for her when tax time comes.

Good find, 22 years old and just over 100k on the clock. The old guy sure didn't drive it a lot.....might explain why there's no rusted out areas....and for someone who couldn't push the peddles, there is a remarkable lack of dents in the front bumper area......nice truck.

You did well. I would have bought it. Back in the '80's I drove a work truck with that engine. Not quite as strong as a 350, but every bit as durable. We got over 200,00 miles out of that engine hauling heavy loads.

I bought a new 1992 short bed GMC with the 350 and 5 speed straight stick. I loved that combo, powerful and good gas mileage. But in town it was a lot of shifting. Some drunk T-boned me in it driving home from his AA meeting.

Interesting. In my neck of the woods, there are more used trucks on the lots than cars, it seems. Every make (except Toyotas, those are scarce), every model, every option in just about every price range. My head was spinning this past July when I sold my F-150 and bought a Silverado. Soooooo many choices.

Nice find there, Dave. Quite a switch from a Suburban, eh? I hope it serves you as well as your old Sub did.

Here in my part of Utah there seems to be far more trucks on the road than cars. However it`s hard to sell a used two wheel drive, everyone wants 4WD. I have a 2000 GMC extra cab short bed step side that I leave my trailer permanently hooked up to pull our ATV as trail riding is our thing. Wife has a 2001 Silverado. I have the bigger V-8, she has the smaller one.

You can find them once in a while. I bought a 1994 Ford F250 2WD, 460, auto, with 48,000 miles on the clock about five years ago for $4000. It did need a new tires because the old ones were checked. Been kept indoors and looked like new. I sold the fiberglass running boards, flares and visor for $1000 which more than paid for the tires. Just recently I gave the truck to my son in law since his old truck died. Worked out great for me, now I have a truck I can borrow and don't have to maintain or pay insurance on.

Say again, that is Monday in upstate NY? - darned nice condition '93 for the upstate I know.

I bought new a 1992 GMC just like that except red. Mine had the 350 engine, 5 speed manual shift. That hauled and gave fair gas mileage. It was a project to shift though in heavy slow traffic. Even put on the same visor. I got wiped in a intersection. The guy was coming from a AA meeting. Had a couple kids with him and one said something about I was his dad`s third accident that month! I had a knot on my knee but didn't go to the doctor. A couple months later I got a pulmonary embolism from it and was in ICU for 8 or 9 days. Almost killed me! I really miss that truck!

My neighbor across the street and his two sons all drive Chevy pickups or Suburbans, and there's hardly a week goes by that there isn't one of them up on blocks. I'll stick with my Tacoma.
