hi guys i have a older (16 year old i think) 10/22 and it has the flat mag release. I was looking at Ruger.com and noticed that the new 10/22 have a longer mag release now, SO since everything is all the same can i just buy the new factory longer mag release and install it into my gun?

i think this is the factory Ruger replacement mag release i think? And why is it plastic and not metal like my stock one, is that right?

Yes, they will interchange... you might try posting a "Want to Trade" ad here in the classifieds... some folks still prefer the older design.

Agreed. I'm trying an extended Volquartzen release in mine but I really like the original flat release. My son likes the extended because the original is a bit difficult for him. I'll likely go back to the early flat one even in my brand new 10/22.

What don't you like about it?

I've been using the first Ram-Line, then Eagle and now Ruger style releases since the late 80s. I even have some of the same style from Ranch Products in stainless steel.

For me, when hunting in the cold, the original flat factory release was near impossible with gloves. The slight extension allows me an easy one hand, push-with-thumb-and-catch-mag-in-the-palm operation.

Sure one can get the hang of something but why try so hard? There's a reason the aftermarket made 697689 different kinds AND Ruger eventually put an extended version in all of them. Mine's stainless and I like it.

(Trigger shoe is now polished aluminum and bolt release is polished stainless)

That looks great Buckeye. Did you polish it yourself?

Yes but it looks a lot better now. Has a metal butt plate now too....

You might find some finely polished Ruger parts on eBay that I converted if you look. I think "Buckeye" is my "status". :D

BTW, that's one of my refinished, better than new, no Ruger goop stocks as well.
