Sometime this afternoon, there was an explosion in a mixing room at Lake City One fatality, with more hurt. So far, just a scroll on tv screen

The questions asked by news media are amazing. The commander is a Lt. Colonel in the Army. "What's a primer?" "What caliber does it fit?" "Do all calibers use this primer?"

I worked out there for many contracts doing asbestos related stuff. I was sitting in my pickup doing paperwork and saw a guy walk by with a primer mix cart headed to one of the special buildings that lets the top blow off instead of the walls.
About 10 minutes after he passed me I heard a real loud WHUMP ! He managed to blow himself to pieces apparently.

Hi,
A buddy has been at Lake City several times in the last couple of years doing some consulting work. I don't think he ever got close to the part of the plant involved with this accident, though. Gotta check with him...

My old apartment in Independence was about five miles from Lake City. I imagine it rattled the windows there . . .

It happens. My wife's great-uncle died in an explosion at a plant in Dynamita, Mexico, and his son died in at explosion at Olin's plant in Illinois.

Manufacturing ammunition is not for the "faint of heart".
My father (a chemical engineer, like me) worked for Hercules Powder Co.'s smokeless powder plant at Kenvil, NJ in 1939, and was exposed to a deadly explosion there shorty after he started. Dad went on to managing the Hercules Powder Co. smokeless powder plant in Radford, Va from 1941 thru 1946 for the war effort. They had numerous accidents there. Dad never talked about them.
He went on to building delivery systems for WMD's (Polaris, Poseidon, Minuteman) in Utah until 1970. He had enough.

This plant is East of Independence. I used to work across the street West, 7 Highway. It was thick with copperhead snakes. Inside Lake City is rattlesnakes. Large deer herd , also. I remember when Remington and Winchester ran it. ATK now

I was a few miles away when the Hercules plant in Bessemer, Alabama blew up in 1979 (IIRC). Rattled the windows. One worker died.
