Took down a sugar maple and left the remains of the stump. Found this Pilated Woodpecker chowing down on the grubs in the remains.

I should have also stated that this was the first, and so far the only, time I have ever seen that particular species of bird.

I have a bunch of old trunks that have started to rot and Piliated woodpeckers will make the rounds looking for bugs. They have a distinctive raucous call.

When I see one of those Pileated Woodpeckers, I can never believe how BIG they are! Used to be you never saw one, but they seem to have come back.

Well things do come to pass. After posting this and stating that I had never seen another, I just looked out the window, at 13:25, and low and behold there was one on my maple tree. BIG bird! My day is now complete.
