Early Security Six Hammer Spurs

While reading John Amber’s 1970 Gun Digest review of Security Six prototype s/n X2 I was surprised how much its hammer spur resembled a single action’s. Was that hammer spur used on production revolvers, and if so for how long?

You mean it looked like a pre-17?

Perhaps a little bit but it did not bring a S&W pre-17 speed hammer to mind. From a side view it curved up and thinned terminating in a point. It looked more like a Black Hawk hammer than a speed hammer.

As far as I know that hammer was never used on production Sixes. I have serial number 150-00141 and it has the typical Six series hammer on it. I also have some pretty early Speed and Service Sixes and they all have the same style hammer.

Since it was a prototype, they may have tried multiple styles of hammers to see what might have worked/looked best with that style frame.

Thanks for the answer. That hammer just made the gun stand out as an early collectors' item. I wonder if X2 is in a private collection.

I wish that they had made a wider spur target style hammer.
