I realize that the technology is progressing but does anybody really think driverless cars are a good idea. Granted plenty of pedestrians are run down by cars with drivers do we need unmanned cars doing the same. Maybe I’m stuck in the 20th century.

I to think driverless cars are a bad idea even though I've fantasized about them for years.. But, I suspect one day we will think of them kind of like cruise control... I suspect when it first came out there were a number of folks that had the same feeling about it.

I remember years ago reading (Popular Science or Popular Mechanics) about cars that could be switched to become airplanes. They said you could live out in the country, drive from your home to some place where you could take off. fly to the place where you work, land, and then drive to your place of work. I can't imagine the mayhem that would cause if it ever happened, hundreds of thousands of auto/planes flying back and forth everyday. Rush hour in the sky, yeah, right.

Yes, of course... But it’s easier for some of us to be intellectually lazy and blame technology we don’t understand and are afraid of. I was at a collision scene where an older gentleman was driving and his forward collision monitoring system suddenly stopped his car without him knowing why. It was dark and he didn’t notice at first but a pedestrian had run in front of his car which was traveling at about 40 miles per hour. By the time the car hit the pedestrian, it was only traveling at about 5 miles per hour causing the pedestrian a couple bumps and bruises instead of killing her. The driver didn’t realize what happened until the boyfriend came running out into the street screaming. The technology saved the woman’s life who was jaywalking. No system is perfect but the technology being employed in these cars will out think you 999 out 1,000 times.

I thought the reason for the guy behind the wheel was to keep the car from doing something stupid? If he's not responsible then why was he even in the car?

Maybe he's just there to be a witness. "Yeah, the car killed her". End of story.

Was the woman texting on her phone and literally stepped in front of the car without giving time for even the computer to react? Do we know the details or just the fact she wasn’t in a crosswalk.

I feel bad for her but at the same time, computers cannot calculate human stupidity. It’s a shame because I bet the technology is good. Pedestrians get killed by cars with people in them, we haven’t outlawed cars, I hope they don’t outlaw driverless cars...

I work with forward collision avoidance systems every day, they work well. Over the years the manufacturers have figured out way to join systems together to make cars safer. Rain sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, anti lock brakes, blind spot detection, etc have all been teamed up to create really cool systems that are designed to aid the driver.

Less than a mile from my house the county put up a flashing warning deer crossing sign that blinks with about ten bulbs on it. Within a couple days of putting it up I saw two road killed deer laying under the sign!
I believe the family of that lady will win a huge lawsuit and they aught to.

No one has mentioned what I said about the driver sitting behind the wheel. What the heck is he there for? Evidently it's because they don't 100% trust the computer to operate the car safely in all situations. A human driver is responsible if he hits a pedestrian who crosses the street without a marked crosswalk. So, isn't the driverless car just as responsible?

I would imagine the guy sitting behind the wheel was just relaxing and enjoying the sights instead of paying attention like he was really driving the car. If he was paying attention, it shouldn't have happened.

Sorry, I don’t believe it. Technology works in a very narrow window. Anything outside that window is toast. The lady that was hit proves that! I deliver flowers and use a gps to find addresses. Yeah that gps, a Garmin, is off by a quarter of a mile at times. It is worse on cloudy days. Our autonomous cars will give our enemies, military grade technology.

I'll admit to not reading all, well most, of the published details of this story.
Does anybody know if the car or it's "operator" tried to miss the woman?
Lots of people manage to get hit by cars and most of the time it's their own fault.
I was taught at a young age not to walk in front of moving cars, so far have managed
not to get splattered.

Don't worry about driverless cars. People are much stupider. 92% of all fatal accidents involve driver error and 70% involve alcohol. The driverless cars are going to better those statistics by a considerable amount.
