Today in History says today in 1952, DRAGNET made its debut. Probably every cop action TV show from the '50s and '60s owes its being to Jack Webb and Harry Morgan.

Joe Friday carried a snubbie S&W Model 10. Bill Gannon carried a 4" Model 15.
The internet tells us "Just the facts, ma'am" was never uttered by Webb? Well...
As a kid, I figured I could outrun these two any day of the week.

Reminds me of the "Copper Clapper Caper". :)

I liked the Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks movie Dragnet, it was a really fun movie to watch and Akroyd's portrayal of Webb was pretty good.

Our high school driver's ed had a movie that was one of the Dragnet series where some kids die in a car crash, Webb's deadpan serious look made it

Ah, but before Harry Morgan was Ben Alexander as officer Frank Smith.

I listen to the original radio episodes on XM radio... and you can also go to old time radio or such on the web and subscribe and download them... they are great... the dialogue when they are interviewing witnesses is great...

Dragnet was a radio show before it was a TV show and continued on radio concurrent with the TV show when that started. Friday's first partner was Sergeant Ben Romero, portrayed by Barton Yarborough, who died suddenly in 1951. (They actually did a show on Sgt. Romero's death from a heart attack called "The Big Sorrow" - after the first few shows they were always entitled "The Big {whatever}" ). After a few other partners, as they worked the kinks out from Yarborough's death, Webb settled on Ben Alexander as Officer Frank Smith. Smith was Friday's partner on the majority of the original TV show until 1959. When the series was revived in 1967 Webb wanted Alexander as his partner again but Alexander had prior commitments he couldn't get out of and Webb created the character of Bill Gannon, played by Harry Morgan. Gannon was Friday's partner throughout the life of that series until 1970.

Yes indeed, I remember listening to Dragnet on radio and later on when we had a TV our whole family never missed an episode if we could help it. Oddly enough I'd swear I hear Joe Friday say, "just the facts ma'am". I'm sure I heard it.

I remember Mr. Alexander. He owned a Ford dealership in San Francisco and I bought my 1966 Ford Mustang from that dealership. Wish I still had that little "pony".

I recall my mom taking me to a matinee of the DRAGNET movie when I was a little kid. The opening graphic portrayal of a shotgun murder stayed with me for quite a while.

Oh yeah, then he added that shaking his head back and forth to really bring on the dramatics. A man of few words.
