sorry if it's been asked before, but i did a search and didn't find anything.

i dumped my sr9 because of peening. i bought a cz75b sa. no regrets.

for whatever reason, today i started thinking about the sr9c. of course, the first thing that went through my mind was peening.

anyone?

Not that I'm aware of, no SR pistol owner here has claimed a peening problem in months.

thanks josh - did the compact ever have any problems?

also, are you saying that they finally got the larger sr9 peening problem fixed?

The 9c has had a couple fairly isolated issues. Mainly light primer strikes with 95% of them being experienced with WWB 115gr FMJ ammo. There was also some initial problems with a select few 9c's that had failure to reset issues when using the 17 round mags. Other than that, AFAIK, the 9c has been well received. The mag issue seems resolved for the most part, but a few 9c's still come out of the box unable to reliably fire WWB ammo.

The full SR9 has had all the teething issues corrected and with the addition of the 9c to the SR fold came improvements to the trigger internals. Mainly seen as a more uniform trigger across multiple guns due to tighter tolerances. Most SR9 issues today are easily/quickly solved with help online or via Ruger.

The new SR40 has some QC issues it seems with a small sample of guns, otherwise, so far so good.

Josh,

Have you actually had personal experience with the recent SR9's? I'm still looking for a quality reasonably priced 9mm.

Personally and hands on, very little. All the local SR9s I've seen recently (post 9c release) have been older V1.1 models. I did get to see an SR9c someone brought to the range. I got to fondle it, but I was on my way out. I did like it a lot. I can only tell you what opinions I've gathered in my experience from my own SR9 and what info I've gathered from reading online.

The thing about reading forums online is that you only get a biased sliver of information, usually negative in regards to functionality. Meaning, this is a technical forum, people come here for help or advice. The majority of posts regarding a new product from a newer user are asking for help. In the real world, the majority of SR owners have been pleased with fairly flawless guns.

810wmb, I have a co-worker twho bought both the SR9 and SR9c. He visits the forum sometimes (crittergetter). He told me he has had no problems at all from either gun. I have handled both and have to admit I like the "c". Probably will get one myself at some point. He let me fondle the SR9c and it fit my hand well. It looked to me to be well made too.

AMEN !

+1

thanks gentlemen!

it's nice to know ruger finally ironed out the peening problems with the sr9

I noticed a very small peening mark on 1 of the lugs on barrel that lock into the notch on slide. This was within the 1st 150 rounds or so. It was minor so I used a small needle file to remove burr and polished it in with fine emery paper and scotch bright. Since that initial "wear in" period I touched it up 1 more time at about 250 rounds and it now is fine and wear free at 975 total rounds. This is hardly worth mentioning and prob. was so minor that most people would have never noticed. I'm a machinist / tool designer by trade so I look for stuff like that.

What is the peening? Where do I look for it?

Peening is the hammering effect of material and deformation is the result of it. I will post a pic of the area I saw it on my SR9c after I get some rounds in this weekend and field strip. Basically if you rack the slide and watch where the barrel meshes up with the slide, those are the potential areas that any mismatch will peen the material (in this case stainless steel). Not sure where the problem areas were on the original SR9's, but early on there was some fit issues that for the most part appear to have been worked out at the factory.

I have a couple thousand rounds through my 9c now with no evidence of peening. I dont have a full size so dont know about those.

One minor issue Josh didnt mention with the 9c that myself and a few others had with the 9c was at initial break in. Had quite a few stove pipes at first using 115 grain ammo. After 100 or so 124 grain rounds I havent had any more issues with the 115 stuff. And yes I did strip it down and clean it before taking it out the first time.

The 9c has become my favorite now. As much as I love my P944 I like the 9c even better.
