Difficult extraction/30 Carbine

I have an OMBH in 30 Carbine. Purchased some factory loads for the brass and began reloading. Very difficult extraction with both. Reload is 4.7 grs. Unique under a 115 gr. cast bullet. Not a hot load. My gunsmith friend looked at chambers with a borescope and said they were "very rough", so he polished (not reamed) the chambers. No noticeable difference, still very hard to extract the empties. Suggestions?

Trim length is VERY important in 30 carbine. Polishing cyl. is important and the throats are usually tight but nobody seems to make a reamer for them so staying with a .308 is also important. I use a lot of .309 but have cleaned up the throats. Surplus brass seems to stick more than non surplus but watch the trim length and it helps. Some cylinders are tighter than others.
The 30 carb. is one of my favorites for shooting. If the chambers are to tight you can also hone them. I got a hone from Enco.

This is a common problem with the .30 Carbine round when fired in the Blackhawk. Not sure what folks do to solve it, but I have read many that complain of this.

do not wipe off the brass after you reload with any oily rag or cloth....... :roll:

Factory loaded 110 fmj ejects fine out of mine but hits approximately 8" high at 20 yards. Hornady 90 gr XTP loaded with a max load of H110 brings the point of impact down to within 1-2" high at 20 yards and then I start experiencing sticky extraction. I have plans to lighten the load but will need to raise the front sight to compensate. For now it is easier to tap out the occasional sticky case.

I'm pretty sure the Blackhawk cylinders are reamed as a straight wall and the reloading dies give the case a slight taper. If i had to guess, your anemic 4.7 grain unique load is depositing carbon behind the case, causing extraction issues.

Good point. I am going to try some slower burning powders as well. I have a 25-20 Bowen conversion of an OMBH and fast powders (231, Red Dot) caused the cases to back out enough to tie up the cylinder. Not so with H-110 or 4227 etc. so will try those in the 30 Carbine. Also polished the brass to remove all the crud. Normally don't do that very often with 41's, 44's or 45's, but maybe this cartridge is just fussy.

Me too and I love it. He does a fabulous job except for the smaller than normal barrel diameter. I tried to use a Weaver scope mount on mine but the barrel measures .720 instead of the usual .760. It seems minor but it was enough to make a difference. I use Norma 200 and the loads are crazy accurate in mine.

And to conclude the sticky extraction issue, went to the range yesterday with some 125 gr. Rimrock SWC's sized .309 ahead of 10.2 grs. 2400. No extraction problems.
