Good times on the rifle range this weekend. I bought a Davidson's Circassian Mini 14 a few months ago and I've been slowly finding the time to develop a load for it. This one seems to work well.
I have a bunch of components laying around that I've had for years. Had a box of 63 grain Sierra .224 JSPs that I actually bought in the 1970s. It still had the price tag on the box (it was $3 and change). When I went to buy more of that particular flavor at the gunstore yesterday, to my astonishment that same box of 100 Sierra bullets was over $30. Wow.
Anyway, this load works well. I fired several 5-shot groups and all were under 1.5 inches at 50 yards; this one was the best at 1.30 inches. The barrel was pretty warm, too, so the rifle doesn't seem to shift its point of impact as things heat up. No failures to feed, either. Everything worked just the way Mr. Ruger intended it to. Iron sights with this 60-year-old boy behind them. I haven't done anything to accurize this rifle, either. It is as delivered except I swapped out the flash suppressor for a California-compliant muzzle brake. Military brass. No case trimming or anything exotic; just loaded them with 748 through the dispenser and off to the range. Nice. This has become one of my all time favorite rifles.
Oh, and the cartridge OAL noted in the photo is wrong; it is actually 2.245 inches OAL.
