Fusilier Complex Range Safety Officer (RSO) Paul Robichaux contemplates newly acquired Ruger Blackhawk .357 Maximum. Revolver had been abused by previous owner; whom, fortunately, hadn't taken gun apart. Robichaux spent an afternoon in tutorial with Bradshaw, receiving lessons in teardown maintenance and trigger job.

Unable to find IMR or Hodgdon 4227, or 296/H110, Paul Robichaux loaded his .357 Maximum with Honady 180 silhouette bullets seated over low-book charge of Alliant Blue Dot. Paul intuitively knew to start low. Paul elected to not shoot handholds which came with the gun, instead pulling all the bullets.

Silhouette's Braud brothers stand with well used, well cared for ordnance. Charlie holds classic T/C Contender, with T/C stainless 10" barrel in 7mm TCU (Thompson/Center Ugalde). Philip holds Ruger stainless
Blackhawk .357 Mag with 10" Shilen barrel and Leupold 2.5-8x LER (Long Eye Relief) scope.

Vintage T/C Contender chambered for the best all-around cartridge for Production category competition, the 7mm TCU. Stainless barrel fitted with Bo-Mar T/C rear sight, and, up front, 4-D Globe by Lansing Shooting Supply. The Lansing Globe features a threaded flat blade, adjustable for both width & height. Back in the old days Production meant factory produced, with factory parts only.

Contender with top of the line Pachmayr Gripper stock and Pachmayr forend. Warren Center's Contender remains the best of all interchangeable barrel systems.

Charlie Braud explains to Bradshaw the meticulous loading procedure for pristine accuracy of his cast bullets in the Contender. 7mm TCU starts with .223 Rem brass pushed over progressive expander, fire formed for 40-degree shoulder. Details include debur flash hole; neck size 1/2-neck to align case with bore (only works with concentric chamber); drive bands sized for snug fit in chamber leade.

RCBS 145 grain cast from Lyman #2 formula of 92% lead, 2% tin, 6% antimony. Drive brands and nose section receive sizing. Powder 23 grains Accurate 2015, CCI 400 small rifle primer.

Veteran of many shutoffs, Charlie Braud loads one of his cast 7mm TCU rounds into T/C Contender.

CREEDMOOR position (note Creedmoor is spelled double-E, double-O!).

Anyone doubting the accuracy of a good cast bullet should have put a spotting scope behind Charlie Braud as he shot T/C Contender in 7mm TCU and his Dan Wesson Arms M-15 .357 Mag. Charlie cannot live without accuracy and his bullets deliver. (No, he is not a commercial caster.)

Very nice. I've gotten good accuracy from cast bullets. But I've also gotten poor accuracy. I blame the poor accuracy more on myself though. :)

contender, coach, don.... many thanks.

Joe S.... the Safari Silhouette Shoot displayed the spectrum of cast bullet accuracy, from perfect to pathetic. Most notable difficulty seen with a known-accurate Ruger Redhawk, which bullets did o.k. at 50 yards, but veered north, south, east, west at 100 and 200 yards. Come to find out, the .44 Mag was stoked with commercial cast 240 SWC's----almost certainly bevel base----loaded over a mag charge of H110. Had those commercial cast 240's been allowed to mosey at 800 fps, the bullets should have kissed sweeter, despite of field stone trajectory.
