Dang Squirrels !!

We put a supposed "Squirrel Proof" bird feeder and at three or more of those tree rats cleaning it out every day ; A CO2 crossman pellet pistol was doing nothing (no telling WHERE the pellet was going anytime !!)
So, yesterday, I went by WallyWorld (didn't see any wallyworld people THIS trip) and visited the Sporting Goods Dept.
Well, being a RUGER lover, How could I resist ;
I bought a Ruger Blackhawk ELITE .177 pellet rifle with a 4x32 scope and a tin of Red tipped hunting pellets.
Assembled it and tested it on the back porch with a "reactive" target. DANG!!!! at about 30+ feet that scope was DEAD on the mark.
This morning them little tree rats were at it again; opened the door and they sped up into the tree; Managed to drop TWO of them,; One a female and the other a MALE with the a set of gonads almost as big as he was !!
I'll get the third one sometime in the next couple of days.
I Think I LOVE my new RUGER !!!!!!

I call shenanigans on you Pamela. You purchased the squirrel-proof bird feeder knowing it would not work leading you to the eventual solution which involved purchasing another Ruger. We know you Pamela. Don't try to pull one over on us.

Native Red or Douglas Squirrels used to get most of the food out of my bird feeders. I solved the problem by relocating the feeders. I nailed a 2x4 to the porch roof structure so that it extends 6 feet out and ends over my dining room window. My feeders hang from it on cords that run through pulleys back to the porch. The feeders are 9 ft. above the ground and 5 ft. away from the window. I was able to remove the cylindrical cage cover from my “supposed ‘squirrel proof’ ” feeder for better bird watching during meal time. Now only chipmunks compete with the ground birds for the seeds the other birds spill.

Unlike what I’ve seen non-native large city squirrels do my little native Reds only rarely dash across the porch so my approach won’t work everywhere but it allows me to enjoy both them and the birds. The squirrels’ chirping like bark keeps me company and they are cute little “tree rats.”

Not much value for you now, but Honda sells a rodent resistant tape.
It has capsaicin coating it. We have used it on standby generators to
help keep mice from eating the wires. Would guess the squirrels might
not like it either.

I use my SR22 with a suppressor. My neighbors don't hear a thing and it bewilders the hell out of the crows when one of their kind just drops over dead.

These are kinda scrawny squirrels and by the time yo shucked them outa their skins, there wouldn't be much meat left; I guess if you were REALLY hungry the effort might be worth while or IF you had a dozen or three quarter dozen to clean and throw in the pot.

That is why one grandparent noted, shooting only one squirrel didn't make sense. It took a limit to feed the family, including the dumplings! Good acquisition. Roland has used a .177 to thin his herd/ flock? More keep coming from the far reaches of the forest. :shock: Good luck. :mrgreen:

A couple of years ago, one of the mods over at a car forum I frequent had to replace the interior of his wife's brand-new Hyundai Santa Fe. Seems they left one of the windows cracked open about an inch one warmish April evening, and his son left a Snickers bar in the backseat, and a squirrel promptly squeezed himself through the crack.

So once the little (expletive deleted) got done with the Snickers bar, he started in on the seat upholstery. And the dash pad. And the headliner. And some of the wiring. And, and, and . . .

All told, the final repair bill was $10,000 Canadian (the family lives in Quebec). Apparently neither the guy's Hyundai dealer nor his insurance agent had seen anything like it.

I chucked both bodies over the fence by the ditch in front of our place ( we live on a dirt road); Checked this morning and the female body was gone; When we got home form the movies, and I was closing the gate, took a look and the male body had disappeared. Apparently something reaped the bounty !!
NOBODY was bothering the bird feeder this morning !!
