The Mauser Model 98 is indeed a controlled round feed system and primary reason for manufacturing as such was for reliability in a rifle going to battle, war. A German soldier was not always shooting his rifle from an upright position but often times hunkered down in a "fox hole," or bunker which had been bombed and full of rubble, timbers, etc., etc. The 98 system will permit you to strip a round from the magazine holding the
rifle upside down and feed the round into the chamber. Most secure system ever invented.
