Today I installed a Tekko 7" two-piece handguard set to my Ruger AR556. It fit without tools but needed that extra top and bottom "squeeze" in order to tighten the delta ring. I used a large pair of pliers and "squashed" the top and bottom together tightly and successfully tightened the delta ring. The rail is on SO tight it feels like it's welded to the gun! Anyway, when using the pliers to tighten the fit of the top and bottom pieces of the handguard, I heard a crunching metal sound. Is that normal?

Forcing something to fit can easily result a "crunching metal" and/or "crackling sound". At other times, it can also result in a "tink, pop, ka-pow, or bang"....

At any rate yeah, I'd say that what you experienced could be called "normal".

Hard to be definite, but I suspect the anodizing was crackling as you crush fit the two halves together.
