finished up these grips and loading block for a friend of mine that competes in Cowboy action shooting. the wood is flame Box Elder and is completely natural. there was no dye added when they were stabilized.

My dad raised me in a cabinet shop we still have but we never worked with exotic wood very much. Maybe we stabilized the wood but we never used the term stabilized. I really like the grain patterns in wood no matter what it was used to build. The grain in your grips is beautiful. I like the subtle look of the loading block better. Could you explain how the wood is stabilized please?

Box Elder isn't exotic, it's actually a species of maple native to North America.
basically when pistol grip or knife blanks are stabilized they are put into a air tight chamber and a clear resin is added. the chamber is then sealed and a vacuum pump is turned on. this draws out all the air from the inside of the wood and at the same time replaces it with the resin. after the wood is completely filled with the resin the blanks are then baked to cure and harden the resin. this really strengthens soft/brittle/fragile blanks that normally couldn't be used and also makes the wood more resistant to warping, swelling, cracking.
