CONSIDERING A RUGER NO 1

Hello to all relatively new to the forum. Asking for your honest dealings with the ruger no. 1. I am considering a 25-06 . I know you cant believe everything you read on the net but my concern is there is an awful lot of hype dealing with out of the box accuracy in general with the no.1's. All of the articles seem to admit the accuracy problem can be overcome..... Just thought I would get the input from all of you current owners.

Coolest rifle I have ever owned was a pawn shop rescue #1A Light Sporter in .243 with a Simmons AETEC scope on it. I traded a decent quality kit 45 Flintlock rifle and a beat up S&W 9mm straight across for it.
"Nobody wants a single shot" the pawn clerk said.
With 55gr Nosler Ballistic tips over a casefull of Varget, it would run 3965fps pretty consistently with great accuracy once I worked on the forend fit.
I like the Federal Premium Nosler 100gr Partition ammo for deer hunting, flat shooting and a sledge hammer dump of energy on target. I shot 11 deer with it.
sad story, I sold it to raise bail money to get my youngest daughter out of jail, things we do for stupid kids for stupid reasons, but made her momma happy I was unselfish enough to do that because she knew how proud I was of the beautiful wood stock and the deal I got on it.

I have owned a few 8 or 9 and never had a bad one or a #1 that needed work to make it shoot.

I have a stainless laminated 1B in 25-06. Love it! The rifle does not seem to like any bullets heavier than 100 grains but it shoots the 100gr partitions very well. Deer do not go far if anywhere but straight down when hit with them anyway so it does not bother me at all. It shoots the 90gr sierra hp's the best...normal accuracy with them is under an inch and quite regularly I get 1/2" 3 shot groups. Nothing has been done to the rifle other than shoot it and clean it.

The biggest word of caution I would give is to make sure your finances are in order because you wont be able to stop at just one. Make sure you have some extra gun money rat holed away somewhere 'cause your gonna need it sooner then later!!

Accuracy problems are more smoke than fire. I've got 5 now. My last one is a .223 1V that will group 5 at 100 yards you can cover with a quarter.

I have 3 of them, they all shoot extremely well and they all get used a lot..the more I shoot them the more I like them. I did have a problem with the first 2 #1's I bought and that problem concerned their beauty, too nice to shoot. I sold those first 2 and bought a 3rd as a pawnshop beater and it's my go to Varminter. The next 2 were a bit beat but they get used a lot...I like #1's

I have two. Wanted them in 6mm Rem. so I sent them to Mark Penrod in Indiana. He was recommended by Krieger Barrels. The mid range one shoots under 4" at 600 yards. The long range one shoots about 5.5" at 900 yards. Can't wait to sight it in at 1,000. The point is if something isn't to your liking, you can fix/change it. It is well worth the time and money. Love the number ones. Been prairie dog shooting them for years.

One of mine is a stock 6mm 1B...never really gave it a looong range opportunity except one blustery wet day at 400yds...30 mile gusts and pouring, the #1 with a 6x20x40 semi target scope was able to put 10 shots in at under 6"....most of the 6" was weather related so I know this dog will hunt! This is a serious hunting rifle, it don't go to range very often...

Buy one! You won't be disappointed. Accuracy may have been an issue 20+ years ago but it isn't anymore. The No1 is one of the most elegant rifles out there IMO.

you need to get one! I have 2, 6mm and 270. And keep looking at more. But there is not much I cant do with the 2 I have.
25-06 is good choice, one of my favorite cartridges, works real well on pronghorn. The only deer I ever shot, that dropped in tracks and never even kicked was with 25-06.

Thank you very much to all that have replied. Based on your input i have gone ahead and purchased a ruger no.1 in the 257 weatherby. Actually for me it was somewhat of a difficult find. :shock: I mean they are out there but seems like they are selling fast. Many times when I located one I was a day late or a dollar short. I wanted a falling block for sometime now. The 257 weatherby in this falling block may also be a nice mixin the equation.

OOH -- You will love that .257 . They are "Hold on the FUR", Don't over think this. In the real world, aim at it, IT WILL TAKE OUT NORMAL THINGS....! If you think you need a second or 3 rd. shot, Hold extra's between the fingers on the fore arm hand. Worry about brass later. Look at gun shows for shells , ETC. They can be loud...

With the same barrel length, the 25-06 handloaded to equal pressures is about 250fps less than a 257 Wea. with 100-120 gr. bullets. The Ackley splits the difference. I have been shooting the 25-06 off and on since the 80's & had my 26" Sendero 25-06 "Ackleyed" by Kirby Allen for about the past 10-11 years. I felt the difference between the AI and the Wea. was not enough to worry about.

However, with the 257 Wea. Number 1 you get a double whammie, you also get a 28" barrel, so no way will you get the same performance with a Number 1 25-06 AI with a 26" tube and a .257 Number 1 and a 28" barrel.
How do I know this ? Because of my stated experience with the 25-06AI 26" & now I
have a .257Wea Number 1 ! :mrgreen:

I agree, took a nice 4x5 AR Whitetail last fall DRT. Mine does very well.

A few years ago I found a used #1 in .280 Rem at a local gun shop at a price I couldn’t turn down. It shot .5” groups with 120g and 140g Barnes TTSX but I finally sold it because ti was too nice to be taking out in the field.

If I find another in .45-70, though, I’ll have a hard time passing it up.
