Hello all, new member here and seeking some advice.
I've got a bit of an accuracy issue with a Comapct in a .243 I recently purchased new in the box. I'm not really into taking it back to the dealer (2 hour drive) or shipping it back to Ruger (I'm in Canada) if I can help it.
I love these little rifles, I also have one in a .308 that is a better shooter than I am. Hence why I bought the .243.
I'm hoping it may be a quick fix and why I'm asking the experts here.
The problem is after firing the first shot from a cold barrel, the next 2 (or 3) shots will be 1" to 1 1/2" left/right/low or high from the first depending on which box of factory load I try. (I don't reload) Those shots from a warm barrel are always touching, some are darn near one hole.
I've tried a bunch of different bullets from Federal, Win and Rem from 75 to 95 grain and they all do the same thing. It's that most important first cold shot that's bothering me! All my shooting has been at 50 yards to date due to this.
I slowly broke the barrel in one shot at a time with time for it to cool completely and clean as well for one box of shells. I'm no fan of overheating a barrel.
I've not touched the rifle other than to check for the three stock screws for looseness, all are good and snug. I didn't try to tighten them further.
I was thinking of seperating the stock from the rifle and shimming it to see how it would react to a free floating barrel.
Any and all tips/advice would be appreciated. Or should I just box it up, call Ruger and ship it back?
