I need some advice.

I looked at several M77's and #1's that I had placed in long term storage. the stocks finishes were slightly cloudy and had a just noticable rough feel. I'm thinking it might be from being wiped down with CLP when placed in the crates. I tried a wipe with mineral oil, but that seems to make it more cloudy.

any ideal what I should do, like what would be a good stock cleaner and finish renew short of steel wool?

I tested 0000 steel wool on a 77/22 and it did a great job on getting about 90% of the stock. I was light, concentrating on the worst spots, then very lightly blend in. I'm thinking if I remove the action, I can get it 100%. I feel much better now since I was afraid all my NIB became poor condition.

I'm thinking of wiping down with a finishing oil later, but will need to work up a mixture of something, posibly linseed, parifin & turpintine.
