I typically use Round Up for weeds but have yet to try it on my fence rows. I'm concerned about the health reports re Round Up. What are the alternatives?

The subject came up on another forum after another recent study showed negative effects w/Round Up. Some posters suggested:
Formula 1:
1/2 Gal vinegar
1/4 cup salt or epson salt
1/2 tsp dish soap
1 tsp Dr Fred Summit heat rub

Formula 2:
1 gal vinegar
1/4cup dish soap
2 cups Epsom salts..

These weeds I'm talking about are very hardy.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT USING ROUNDUP (GLYPHOSATE)
Those California lawsuits are similar to many other things that originate in California such as liberal politicians--just a lot of bluster and bull:poop:.
Use of glyphosate on fence rows depends on your expectations. Just what sort of vegetation are you trying to control???? Grass and broadleaf weeds are within the target use of glyphosate. Woody plants, shrubs, trees are not. there are many other products that work better on those plants.
BTW, those 'home remedy' concoctions don't really work--they turn the target plants brown for a while but often don't completely kill.

Glyphosate aka Roundup. I'm still working on a 2.5 gal. jug of 41% concentrate I bought over 30 years ago. It still works, though it's gotten a weaker. I'm ready to buy a new gallon of the 41%.

I've killed many fence rows back in the 90's. I mixed it at 2oz. per gallon and sprayed it per instructions. Tough stuff might take 2 sprayings. Anything you spray has to be currently growing or it won't work. DO NOT cut the fence row back and then spray!

If you don't drink the glyphosate or eat the sprayed growth you'll be fine.

Roundup is safe if you follow directions. Like talcum/baby powder it's all. BS. A lawyer files suit and convinces a jury to believe their lies. After that every other lawyer uses that judgment as "proof" the product causes cancer. No scientific evidence just a previous claim.

I used to use Glyphosate until Monsanto won a lawsuit a couple years ago and has a monopoly on it again. I noticed the price jumped about 300%. Screw them.
Around my garden and orchard I use 15% vinegar mixed with dish soap and orange oil. Expensive and takes a couple applications.
For weeds, anything broadleaf, I use 2-4D mixed with dish soap. very cheap and effective and that's what I would use on fence rows.

I know this not correct but on the ranch I spray a little diesel on the mesquite that grow out here. Weeds? Kills them dead and stay dead for months at a time. It doesnt take much diesel and since its a hydrocarbon , it evaporates very quickly and leaves no trace other than dead vegetation.

I have heard of people mixing a little diesel in their 2-4D soap mix to get more bang for your buck. I tried it once about 25 years ago and it worked great. Diesel is cheap compared to 2-4D or soap. I heard that you can get in trouble with "the authorities" for using diesel so I haven't used it since.

The ranch is 36 miles from town and I don't think anyone will say anything, considering it takes a drive to get there. Plus, its fenced off and the gates are locked. those mesquite are tough to kill and ;take up a lot of water

Thanks for the replies. So, you're saying diesel will kill mesquite? Just spray it on the needles? Kills the roots and all? It would maybe work on blackberry bushes, too.

I would use it in conjunction with the soap and 2-4D, otherwise you would use so much diesel you would contaminate the groundwater.
In a 15 gallon sprayer, 25 ounces of 2-4D concentrate, 4 ounces of soap and at most a quart of diesel, the rest water. The soap makes it all stick to the leaves. Mesquite is hard to kill and I think there is a recommended herbicide for it.

HUH????
All sorts of generic glyphosate on the market as of last week. Where did you get your info???

"Glysophosate builds up in the ground water. I won't use it."
Proof??? Not that I've heard about.

I have 2 1/4 acres of S Fla that used to be jungle. I keep it clear with glyphosate concentrate @ 2 oz per gallon of water. Typically go through 25-30 gallons each time. It does a very good job on the vines we have down here including Poison Ivy.

Since i don't know where the OP is or what weeds he's dealing with it's impossible to say what might work.

Roundup is actually less toxic than salt. Lawyers make a lof of money by convincing empathetic juries that it caused the problems of the litigants.

41% gly is the easiest. The cheapest way to use 41% gly is buy the concentrate (you can even get HDX store brand at The Home Depot) and mix it yourself. Even at half the ratio it's pretty strong.

For really tough stuff, I keep RM43. It's 41% gly with another salt compound added and it will sterilize the soil for 18-24 months. Use this on poison ivy and invasive tree saplings.

I tried to buy some glyphosate 2 years ago and all they had was Roundup at 3 times the cost of the previous year. The guy working there at the feed store was a licensed herbicide applicator and he told me about the lawsuit. Maybe he was wrong, I dunno.

^^^Check around. Generic 'RoundUp' is readily available. I won't quote prices as 'farm store/home improvement store' prices are going to be far different than the bulk pricing. The stuff doesn't 'get old' or freeze so buy a bigger container rather than a 'single use' size.
I'll say that there's a fairly loud 'K-CHING' when one writes the check for a 250 gallon bulk tote. o_O
I'll re-iterate there are better products than Glyphosate for woody/brush control but consider that some products like 'TORDON' will remain active in the soil for years and will migrate outside the application zone.

50gal sprayer in back SxS. 2 qts Grazon PD, pint Remedy, pint surfactant
You're saying you have a 50 gallon sprayer in the rear of your UTV? Just curious, but do you have a passenger who is operating the wand?

You use 2 quarts Grazon P-D. Is that premixed or do you have to mix it with water? "Remedy" is the brand name? "Surfactant" is the generic designation for the last chemical? Which brand?

I just used some Ortho Ground Clear on the huge poison ivy & oak out here. It worked really good. I did my applications just before it got hot around noon hitting it every 3rd day until rains made me stop. Hot temp seemed to make it work better. Also soaking the the stalks of the huge vines really clobbered it quick

Sprayer on the tractor let's me spray my fruit trees and berry vines with a pass down each side. I have them in 3 rows with the trees in the middle.
