Civil war sword

Good evening everyone. Got a question for you civil war, or sword buffs out there.
I just inherited a confederate cavalry sword that has been in the family well.....since the civil war. It is missing its hilt however. I would like to have it replaced. Anyone here have personal experience with this, or have a lead for me? I would like to give it back to my father intact before it is too late to do so. Unfortunately some POS relative took off with the hilt, and the personal diary of my distant relative. Luckily the sword itself was cleverly hidden behind the hot water heater.

But Question? Was the sword already taken apart when the relative took the hilt and diary?

Many civil war swords, North and specially South were purchased from Europe, at least the blades were. I think you will bind that most of any value it had was in the grip, guard and pommel.

Hunt the relative down if possible. You probably don't know which one though. There is a guy that owns a museum downtown in Vicksburg that would probably know someone that might could help you. Just don't call the national Battle Park in Vicksburg. They are very anti Confederate since the Osama years. Remember almost everything Confederate is worth 10x what the same item Union is worth. Just compare authentic belt buckles.

I know a lot of civil war battlefields have museums close by, like Gettysburg. They should steer you to the parts you need to replace them. Or find a competent blacksmith who specializes in historical work to make them for you. Good luck!
