Beautiful animals. Where I was raised in Northern California we called 'em "tree foxes" because they nest in hollow trees and can climb trees (so the coyotes can't wipe 'em out!).
A friend of mine had one for many years as a pet; a logger brought it to him when he'd cut down the den tree and killed the mama. It was like a weird combination of a dog and a cat: dog manners and cat movements.
Couple of weeks ago I was camping out on Santa Cruz Island and was waked up by an island gray fox trying to steal my sox! Can't imagine what he/she wanted them for....pretty sure they don't taste like chicken! Those island foxes are entirely tame and about the size of a small house cat. Odd, like lotsa stuff out on the Channel Islands!
